Hi All

I think this is the right section for this.

My friend has an ecommerce website linked to his .com domain name which he has owned for a number of years and still had about 2 years on it before his registration expired.

A couple of days ago he noticed his domain name was going to an advertising page. It turns out 123 reg have auctioned off his domain name when it was no where near expiring.

They are kind of admitting fault but not being very helpful using some excuse about being a middleman.

How can he get his .com back as his business relies on it?

Thanks

Report them to ICANN (I think it's ICANN he needs to go to, double check that though)

What they did is probably highly illegal, especially as he had paid and was using the domain for valid purposes.

I had a similar issue with my hosting company. paid for my domain and then had it showing their advert pages. I kicked up a stink and they sorted it.

Not show how it works with a 3rd party supplier.

Check who is on the domain

I am sorry but there must be more to this story.
I have dealt with 123reg for many years now and they would not simply auction of a domain name owned by one of their customers.
It would be near impossible to do and they would know just how much trouble they would get into by doing this.
123reg are not some "fly by night" company - they are massive.

So with that in mind, any chance you can give us a little more information?
Because I cannot believe for one second that a .com domain name belonging to a customer that was fully paid up has simply been "sold off".
The only way this could have been done is if the technical contact for the domain authorised the transfer to the new owner.

As the domain name is stil under control - can you tell us what it is?
I'd love to look at the history for the name.

my friend owned saifclothing.com

It had plenty of time left before it expired. My friend did not authorize any sale as his business partly relied on this domain name.

The whois now shows it is registered to someone in America.

123 reg admit that the domain name was put up for auction by mistake but they are saying this happened further up the chain than them so they are not directly responsible.

Even big companies screw up now and then stoofa...

123reg are a pain in the ass and I'm glad to be away from them. Try moving your domains away from them. Ha, you'll be lucky.

Sorry, just had to add that...

I agree, 123reg does suck a bit.

I used to get a website hosted and have a BNC from my friend, so he sorted out the domain for me and he used 123reg as the provider, all was fine untill he decided to close his buisness. I had to wait 5 months beyond the domain expirey date before 123reg released the domain to be registered again.

So i registered with 123 reg, after a month i got an email saying my website will expire in 2 months and that i should decide if i want to keep it or not. I registered the domain for 2 years, and only 1 month had passed so why did 123reg think it was 2 months from expiring? Anyway after a month of emails back and fourth i managed to get that sorted.

After all the hassle, i have no plan to go back to 123reg when its next up for renewal.

Wow, that's unacceptable.

Id kick up a fuss. Contact 123reg and say you are going to get ICAAN / Nominet involved, which should get you noticed. If not, go ahead and contact ICAAN / Nominet.

If what you say is true, then they had no authority to auction the domain, and as such should be returned to its rightful owned.
