Hi Guys,

Ive got a domain (omkar.co.uk) that I want to renew as it ends soon (early November) but wasnt sure if I was getting a good deal with the current domain hosters (UK2.net). Unfortunately Ive not used it, but was thinking of putting a blog on it or something eventually...

I only got it with them as it cost me a £1 to register the domain, but to re-register hosting (which I havent got with them atm) and the domain is going to cost me £10.50 for 2 years (domain alone is £4.50 for 2 years). That sounds fine but I thought I asked if that was reasonable...

If I wanted to move how easy is it and what should I do and will it cost me? I guess I also need to look for good hosting as well...

Sorry for the elementary questions - just really dont know much about this and just want to check if I should stay where I am or move while I can...

P.S. Also Im after another .com domain that is owned by the DomainShop.com who seem to be selling it - does this sound legit or should I stay away? How much would you expect a .com to go for?!?

£4.50 for two years for a co.uk is a good price.
123-reg.co.uk (who I use for all of my domains) would charge me £5.58 for two years.
You could shop around but I don't think you are going to get much better pricing.
Also note that personally I don't like to transfer domains when they are close to renewal.
A domain transfer should just work and within a few days everything should be transferred over.
However things can go wrong and you don't want a domain in limbo as it expires as that can cause you a lot of grief.

You don't have to have your domain and your hosting from the same company.
Keep your domain where it is and renew it - domain only (so long as you've been happy enough with the company).
Now shop around for some cheap hosting.
Once you've decided who will be your host you ask the people holding your domain for you to simply change the name server information and job done.
Domain with one company, hosting with another.
It is actually advised to keep hosting and domain holding apart - as then you don't end up in situations where domain names are held to ransome.

Buying domain names from other people should be straight forward.
Remember a domain name is only ever worth what a buyer is willing to pay.
So look at their "price" and decide if it really is worth that to you.
Just because a domain may have a price of £100 on doesn't mean it is worth that at all - no matter what the name is.
Of course there are some extremely desireable domain names out there but they cost substantially more than £100.
Decide what the domain is worth to you and don't pay more than that.

Cool thought I had nothing to worry about. Whats a good hosting site?

The .com Im after unfortunately doesnt have a price and you have to make an offer - as its with a holding company I suspect theyll be wanting an unrealistic amount...

Transferring a .co.uk is simple and painless. Just don't do it through UK2. Go to the Nominet website and transfer it direct with them. It will cost you just under £11 but if you haven't been with UK2 to 2 years they will charge about £15.
I've recently transferred a couple of .co.uk domains from UK2 to 123Reg and it was done in minutes.
Just remember to start the transfer with the registrar you want the domain to end up with before you go to Nominet.
