basicly as a favour for a friend who started a new business I bought and registered his domain (for him) on my 123-reg account. I also built him a simple 1 page site too, just something to see.

Now a couple fo years down the road and he has asked a company to build a better website for him (it was outside of my skill/time).

Now the company he has got do this have asked me to transfer the domain, i had originaly said ' just send me the DNS servers and i will update'.
The form they have emailed me says "RELEASE OF DOMAIN NAME (TAG CHANGE)" and has no mention of my friends company on it.

Obv i don't mind doing this, but who should I be tranfering the domain too?
I would have thought it best to change it to my friends ltd company/registered address ?

(btw the domain.co.uk and his company name are the same)

Obv I don't want him to have problems in future if he makes the choice to let someone else admin his site and it come back to me for giving it away

The tag doesn't necessarily have to be the name of the company. I handle lots of domains for various customers, but just use my providers IPS-TAG (in this case "FASTHOSTS"). Once the tag has been changed to the new company's, they can control the DNS etc. As long as your friend is OK for you to do it, there's no reason not to.

Sorry to hijack this thread but I recently registered a domain for a friend also on 123-reg. I now want to transfer the domain to his control so that he is responsible for renewing it. I want to do this for a few other domains I have registered and want to hand them off to their owners. What is the best way of doing this? Should I get them to register with 123-reg and do an internal transfer or should I be doing something through nominet?
Thanks

I guess the easiest would be for the friend to register with 123-Reg and then you do an internal transfer. Probably shouldn't incur anyone any costs, or have any chance of downtime/cockups. Should be seamless :D

Nominet is generally only used when you need to change some of the contact details on a domain, or the company that administers it for you goes AWOL, if i remember rightly.

Thanks for the info - Just looked up nominet and they charge for transferring domains so I think a 123-reg internal transfer is the way to go. Many thanks.

Ok thanks for that.

DOes this effectively mean that my name will come off the nominet listing for this domain ?
