I run a small business. At the moment I just run a work group and set up a central share.

I am wondering what are the pros of a domain over a workgroup?

Centralised control.

I would use a domain even for 7+ users, as at least if the company does well you can scale it up when more staff join.

Domain allows you to use tools like Exhange and lock down other users desktops more easily.

7 staff and growing.

can you push applications from the server to PCs?

Also, does anyone know if you can hot swap HDDs in RAID 10 with the onboard raid on Asus P7P55D Evo Intel P55?

depends on how fast you are growing and if you'll be growing and growing in the future..
Also do you want the features of small business server, I assume you'll be looking at that if you want a domain..

Hadn't looked at that, was just going to put standard on.

It will be a webserver and SQL server also (max 7 users...)

Yeah,

It can host external and internel sites, it even comes with a verison of sharepoint for intranet type sites that can manage internal documents and files etc, email as well

Quite easy to setup if you've got the time to learn it I suppose.

Not sure if I'd have one server with SBS running Exchange and also SQL server unless they're virtualised. Especially if you're a company growing quickly.

I'm probably being OTT/silly but i'm sure one who has had more experience can tell you if my advice is any good :p

You can deploy programs to computers using a domain also. We do this if a user/computer is in a certain OU then whatever program will be deployed.

I agree with Xez, I wouldnt want that all on one machine.

As for the workgroup I was in a similar situation, I was the 3rd person to join the company and took control of the IT systems. We started without a domain because I thought it was more hassle than its worth. Even rolled out an exchange server without it on the client machines.

When we got to about 10 users I decided enough is enough and we need centrally managed password policies and lockdown the laptops a little bit and other management things. Had the DC there anyway for the Exchange emails. Wish Id just used domain from the start really as it is minimal effort for a lot of gain.

If you buy SBS Premium (to get SQL Server), then that includes a 2nd Server 2008 license for an SQL box. You can bung everything on one box if you wanted.

what is the benefit of SBS over Standard assuming i dont need to run exchange ?

I suppose the backup center looks good.

I would say Domain. Not only for an ease of use point of view but also security. It makes a lot of sense and as previously stated, you will be able to scale up easily.
