first off.

Recently I bought a couple of domains and have been beavering away on a website. Now I'm close to how I want it I'm looking for some hosting.

I've looked at the ochosting thread and seen there's some good ones. Vidahost/Thermaldegree looks quite good (is that someone's company btw?).

Anyway, the domain names are with another company (register1). So my nOOb question is ...

how do I use my domain names with my site hosted with another company?

*holds up hand in shame, yes I know nothing about it.

does it involve lots of waiting and money?

I had a look and they're a bit more expensive, £49yr (reg1) vs £30 (vida). I only need some webspace, say 20mb and space to hold a forum... so worst case is about 300mb.

I think I've bodged. SHould have got domain and space from same place. Mistake number 1.

Your'll need to log into your Register1 control panel for your domain and change the nameservers to that of your host. For example, NS1.MYHOST.CO.UK & NS2.MYHOST.CO.UK. Your web host will tell you what to change these to.

You will then need to "park" your domain with your web host provider. This will vary depending on what control panel your host uses but it should be a simple task.

Personally I recommend getting your domains from register1 and hosting from todhost. This is what I have done and I really can't fault it. I haven't encountered any downtime yet either which is normally what you get with the cheaper hosts. They are very competativly priced just compare the packages to other providers!

Also they have been the quickest setup I have ever used, register one takes all of two hours and todhost was about the same. The only problem is payments go through paypal with todhost. It would be nice to see a more intergrated payment system.

Edit: Just noticed you bought the domains allready, so ignore the register1 bit :p

so I could keep my domains at register1 (they're very fast) and in effect, channel it to a webhost where my files are stored, for example todhost or vida.

I noticed on vida that I could "transfer" a domain to them for free, what's that all about?

The first part is right about using the web host to store your files and register1 to keep your domain.

As for the question regarding Vida host, im not sure. Your'll need to email them to ask about that.

Vidahost is the hosting brand of Thermal Degree. Much like Register1 is a brand of [whatever the company name actually is...I-Dot networks or something I think], and Herbal Essences is a brand of Proctor&Gamble, etc :)

Since I part-own said company I'll just answer the domain question generally....when signing up for domains and hosting you can register your domain name with company 1, and buy your hosting from company 2. Then you log into the domain control panel and change the nameservers to the nameservers which company 2 will tell you to use.

A domain transfer is when you move the domain to another registrar. Which means little really - I wouldn't do this unless I was unhappy with the current registrar (for example, years ago I transferred all my domains away from 1&1 because they were *useless*). GTLD (com/net/org) domain transfers also extend the registration period by one year. Some (small, crap, kiddy) hosts have been known to take their customers' domains with them when they shutdown (ie, register domains under their name, which is, well, illegal and bad) and this is why people advise on using a separate company for the domain and hosting aspects :)

Also, Killsta is affiliated with Todhost (who use Register1's services as far as I'm aware) in some way, and a (lurking) forum member is also a part of Reg1 in some way. And a few other forum members are involved with other companies...I think Adz counted 12 on the Ochostreview.co.uk site :)

now I see. sweet.

so I would just "require hosting space for this domain"

I think I'll sort it out tomorrow.

*Points to http://www.ochostreview.co.uk/ (17th post and its not been mentioned yet  )

Have a read over all the reviews. I personally reccommend Todhost based on my experiences with them. Excellent service, Excellent speeds, Excellent uptime and the power tools feature is...Excellant :D
