Going to an island resort in April and just wondering if anyone else has been to the Dominican Republic, and had any experiences, tales, advice, places of interest, currency (whats a good and bad exchange rate), etc...

I went in December 08 and had a great time. We didnt really venture out of the hotel complex though although i did walk a couple miles down the beach either side of our hotel.
Had an absolutely fantastic time.

You're probably best just taking dollars as i think thats what we were advised to do

I went to Club Med in Punta Cana in 1992.

I enjoyed it very much. I liked the trapeze. I had to climb a ladder. It was high.
I also saw a lady on the beach with no top. It made me happy.

mjt, aged 7.

Got married in a resort on Punta Cana. Amazing resort along with the others near by, fantastic beach.

Been several times and off there in a couple of weeks, not really much to see, it's more of a relaax in the resort type of place

re currency use US$ in resort for tips, pesos are better out and about but as I say there is not much outside of the resorts except in resorts like Cabarette

don't forget your visa and departue money, $10 each on arrival, $20 each on departure

A lot of resorts will not accept tips we found, but it's nice to be polite should it seem like tips are accepted

I have never encountered this, the one we go to says gartuities included but they are accepted but never hussled for or expected

The situation you refer to has been prompted by the DR government I believe as it was getting to the point where a barman/waiter was earning more that a Teacher Nurse etc and this was causing problems recruiting into essential jobs

Loved my time there, very relaxing, tropical paradise. Didn't venture out of the resort apart from going to visit the sea life/water zoo thing, which was probably worth doing to break up the holiday a bit, it also meant an amazing coach journey allowing us to see the real Dominican Republic, during which the bus drivers friend gave us a guided tour and a history of the island which was fascinating.

That would make sense tbh

Fantastic place. Last went for a wedding in 2008. As mentioned, you won't venture out of the resort - I doubt the guards will even let you. There was a guard at the gate of our hotel armed with a machete... Make sure you try some 151, they all drink it!

I have been out a few times, Santa Domingo, Sosua ( real dump ) Cabarette,Puerto Plata , never had any safety issues just not much worth seeing

What is it about it that you like? Would really like to go back to DR at some point, loved the last place and it was a bit of a C list celeb hang out but would like to try some where different as the last place was picked because of a very good deal at the time.

Great restuarants ( all a la carte in evening, no buffet ), great bars with branded drinks, superb service, nice room with 4 poster beds / jacuzzis etc ) , the staff are amazing and as it is adults only you don't get the big groups which makes people socialise more

Stayed in Punta Cana in June 06,

Was nice and relaxing. I myself wouldn't leave the resort (we did do two excursions)

Only problem we heard about was a couple walked past the "Go past this sign at your own risk" up the beach and got mugged. His neck was all bruised up where his gold chain was taken from him.

But then it did say... don't go past this sign lol.
