Car #10. Had to buy something that I wanted.

That is, another one of these (oh how predictable, what is it with me and single marque fetishes :D):

Firstly, excuse it being dirty in the pics but what can I say, I didn't buy it to look at it!

Anyway - It's a 1988 Chevrolet Corvette C4 - specifically, a Z52. Recognise the colour?

The Z52 was the top-flight option, with an options list including uprated suspension, race anti-roll bars, quickrack, uprated 13" vented front discs with vented 12" rears, four pot calipers all round, optional 6 way power seats, standard air con, climate, PAS, ABS, cruise control and more...it'll pull more G on a skipdan than a Ferrari Enzo, for example!

It currently packs the later alloy-headed L98 5.7 V8, generating a very un-stressed 245BHP and a stump-pulling 340ft.lb of torque, put down through a 4-speed overdrive automatic transmission, with the power being distributed at the rear by an LSD - Which makes it very entertaining, to say the least!

It's in excellent health for it's age but does need some TLC - very minor fettling and a good wash and a wax to bring the paint back to life. Should be the same colour as my first one! Previous owner has done little to care for the bodywork barring (urg) throw a bucket of fairy liquid over it now and then.

Plans are just to refurbish the alloys, go over the bodywork and interior and continue using it as a daily driver - whilst maybe adding a few tweaks and tricks along the way. I want to do a few intake things and add a few performance/detail parts but nothing too strenuous.

(Need a horn that goes "Twit-twoo" according to my neighbour... )

(Needs a good clean still, excuse the detritus. Seats are in remarkably good condition, as are all the electrics. Digidash, trip computers, gauges, info centre, central locking, alarm, aircon, cruise, climate control, power seats, windows, mirrors etc, all in good working order!)

Really nice car to drive, mind. Still can't get over the way it corners, with the Z52 setup and quick-PAS rack! It's also an extremely comfortable and pleasant place to be, cruising on the motorways, in all weathers, enclosed in a snug, warm, stealth-bomber cockpit and with that smallblock gently burbling to itself in the distance.

Haven't had a chance to do anything yet barring clean the glass, pressure-wash it and check all the fluids to make sure it's all in spec.

Got a few bits on order, so hopefully will update this at some point with a few shiny bits :) New head unit, some detail parts, the usual stuff. I'd like to get hold of a weatherstrip kit too, as whilst it's very watertight at the moment the old seals look well past their best. Sods law though that the moment I put new seals on, it'll start to leak.....but then again, most do to some small degree.

Only technical issue that's a pain at the moment is a still-persistent minor PAS leak. A bottle of 'stop-leak' from Lucas has actually slowed it considerably and according to the bottle, 2 are required for major leaks......I'll hold my breath, though. Worst comes to worst, a new rack is relatively cheap, as is the tempting 'Oneturn' performance PAS pump assembly.

Great fun though......put it in 1st, mash the pedal to the floor, the LSD locks up, tail sidesteps and the L98 rips up to the redline in a mix of induction roar, exhaust growl and a haze of unburnt hydrocarbons.

.....with a nice, thick, black set of 11s left on the tarmac.

Just the way we like it

Loving that! Really, really loving that!

How much (if you dont mind!) and whats the insurance like?

Wow, nice! :)

Glad you got another one, was rather disappointed when you got rid of the other one ;)

Yea, I was too but I didn't like that bright red one.....Bit too European for me :) Still a nice car though, just a personal thing.

22, coming up on 4 years NCB, 'standard' policy (i.e. not classic), fully comp with UK & Euro breakdown, looks like my renewal will be approximately £650 this year. That's with Adrian Flux :)

Keeping this one?

For some reason, i actually prefer the previous one, do they look identical or are there differences?

:)

I seem to remember him mentioning in other threads that the insurance is remarkably cheap.

Edit: Wow beaten

i was looking at these on pistonheads after seeing your last one! :)

love these C4s, seem to be very good value for money. :)

what are they like on juice though?

That one, or this one:

:)

And yea, actually keeping this one for a bit (well, 'bit' on my scale is probably more than a month). I'm hoping this'll tide me over till the end of uni and the summer job seeking bit, or take me wherever I need to go, so it should be around for a while! I like it too, so as long as it plays ball, then it won't be going!

Not horrifying, at least. An auto L98 like this will average about 18 around town, 25 on a run (if in good health). A later ('92 onwards, I think) LT1 will average 20 round town and up to 30 on a run.

It's easy to eek extra mileage out of 'em though - changing the tyre profiles, better panel filters, removing the intake restrictions, deleting cats and a silencers, the usual fair - can add a big chunk of economy onto 'em :)

Being in a good state of tune and freshly serviced helps too!

looks really nice, but "4 speed automatic" and "fun" in the same sentence? It'd be a bazillion times better if it were manual imho.

There are three important cosmetic details which probably make all the difference - PRN had the transparent T-tops fitted, with the tint, which probably makes the car look lower.

PRN also had freshly refurb'd early C4 style alloys on as well.......Which were quite in your face.

Also had the UK plate cover on the front of PRN, whereas this one has the standard plate in place :)

PRN was also very clean and polished, whereas this one has a few hundred miles of motorway slog on it and hasn't seen any wax or treatments for 17 years :D

Barring the wheels, the top and the plate, though, they're identical.

I will get these refurbished soon, or might swap to the earlier ones but I'm in no rush. I hope to make it look as-nice :)

And just LOL, Phil :D

Manual Corvettes, the first one being that, are a bit of a pain, unfortunately. The early 4+3 boxes are finikity and a bit agricultural, with a he-man clutch (which, yea, can be fun, if you're not sat in traffic every day - I did get a dead leg a few times) but the real issue is the handbrake which is a flyoff affair, located in the driver's sill panel.

You have to (or at least, I did) reach forwards to release it, which entails lifting it up and pushing it down again, so it becomes a bit of a hassle when you're sat at the lights, or holding it on the clutch! One of those "please don't let my foot slip" moments....because it won't stall, it'll just pull forwards into whatever's in front :D

Great if you're just blasting around in it or using it occasionally but not something I wanted to deal with every day. Later ones are much improved and the clutches tough as hell, so you can just hold it on 'em - but I didn't want a later one (barring the one I'm going to mention below).

One day I will own my 'idea', which is an 89 with an L98, digidash and the 6 speed manual, which is the best combo - but they're about as common as a dodo over here and the cost of importing makes it prohibitive at the moment :)

Anyway, the autoboxes in these are very nice and positive acting, plus you can always lock 'em in lower gears, or out of overdrive and just punch it. Pulls hard in whatever gear it's in anyway :D Plus the autobox allows you to hoon around a little bit more....

Very nice, glad you finally got some pics up. :D

Looks awesome and hopefully I'll be joining you soon in the C4 ownership, then I can bug you all the time when it breaks. :p

(P.S. Get on MSN ;) )
