Hello. Ok, I have an AX 1.1i Memphis as my run around until I buy summat bigger, I was thinking about turning it into a cheapo trackday car.
The chassis and body work is in good condition, no rust and never been bent up.
Obviously in body rolls like a Sumo wrestler and brakes like a tanker and the handling is frightning in the wet when pushed - goes straight on! Which is nice.
The engine is a screamer for a 1.1i and has done 60k all serviced.

Now is it worth getting a AX GT and transposing the engine/running gear/brakes and what ever else I can onto this? Or would I be better tweaking whats in place? I plan to do this over the winter and have drive space and can do the work myself so what do you lot reckon?

Ideally Id like to end up with something that I can hoon round Knockhill and enjoy, not fussed about huge speed, rather have a sweet handling motor that I can really push on with.

Ideas on the back of a plain brown reply please :D

I'd imagine it'd be cheaper to just sell your car then buy an AX GT in good condition and use that. They seem like pretty cool little cars, very revy engines the 1.4 TUs.

If you're gonna buy a AX gt, why not just use that. I'd of thought its a hell of a job doing an 'everyting' transplant. Kind of pointless too.

Plus wouldn't it still be a bit crap as a track day car. Get an old prelude or something with at least a bit of poke.

AX GTs are hella-fun.

BUT!

They have three-stud hubs - I've literally only ever seen one set of decent 'sport' rims for an AX; some old 5-spoke Compo MOs.

They're made of tinfoil - you'll write it off, the first time you have a slight off.

The GT is actually half decent for hooning around at speeds that won't cause you to run out of talent in double-quick time. Very light, just enough power to keep out of it's own way, and cheap.

As penski has mentioned though - 3 stud hubs, so wheel choice for track-suitable stuff is beyond limited....practically non-existant.

ax gt is one of the quicker 0-60 hatches of its time :) 0-60 in circa 8.5 seconds and a top end of 110 mph easy to mod drop a set of 40's on it wity some headwork and cam and your easily sitting in something that can rival most trackday toys with the right handling package

bear in mind as standard it weighs 720KG which is less than my track prepped 205 gti

you should be able to get it to around 650 by removing trim and bits n bobs.

even as a daily driver they make nice cars lovely interior electric windows/central locking and a nice driving position. oh and only group 9 insurance too

other mods you can do is to drop a visa gti lump in (straight fit) 1600 8v or with a LOT of work you can fit a 205 lump :) 1.9 gti although lad motorsport did build a 200 horse Mi16 powered car. but lots of work so avoid unless you like a lot of structural work.

we've had a good few of these in the family(at one point 3 generations of our family had a GT me, my Dad, and my Grandad if you need any advice you can get me on msn at [email protected]

good luck :)
