Don't know what to start with..

I seem to know someone selling a 1.6 Focus Zetec very soon. Email me if you would like to know more.

It has a/c + heated front screen by the way.

rG-tom, brill! Was worried then, thought they couldn't take a standard unit without mods...

saitrix, am I right in thinking the Zetec is a technically lower down the range model than Ghia, but has some extra sporty features like ESP? 1.6 and 1.8l Focus' seem to fall into the same insurance cat. so I want to try to get the 1.8 if I can, though I may be swayed!

Honda civic tbh.
-Looks nice
-Less than a grand for a decent one
-Reliable
-Low(ish) insurance

or an old pug 205 GTI, can get one for around £5-600 and they are pretty fast (higher insurance tho)

Touch, do Honda Civic's need to be driven hard to get the most power, as I recall that the engine revs right up to 8k...

Sleep now I think, then Worms on XBLA, then more cars!

LadFromWales85,

The Zetec is the sporty one with the slightly harder suspension, though it is still comfy. Insurance at 17 for my 1.6 was £1500 fully comp, the best I found for the 1.8 was £1800. The 1.8 is in a higher insurance group, especially under the new 50 group way.

The link abouve shows you all the specs, mine has smokers pack (I don't smoke) and climate pack (Air conditioning, heated windscreen - 'Quickclear' - with heated washer jets and electrically-operated and heated door mirrors).

Any questions about it feel free to ask. Mine also has Toyo T1-R's on the front which make the handling very good for the size of car, certainly surprised quite a few cars about. Email me if you want pics and price etc.

If the Civic is a Vtec engine then it will need revving hard to get the power, all the way upto the limiter just about.

My email is saitrix a.t yahoo dot co dot uk

The Escort is a truely horrible car and should be avoided unless you find a good one for 500 quid.

£3k will easily get you a nice Ford Focus worth having.

I completely agree with this, although I'd even avoid one at £500!

The Focus is a great car - a million miles away from the Escort and you could get a good 1.6 for £3k

You can get good ones for just under £3k now. :) More like £2.8k. ;)

We are discussing the Mk6 Escort, though, which was available as neither an RS Turbo or Cosworth.

No but it was available as an RS.

I don't mind my mk6 for hacking about in but for that kinda money it would have to be at least an RS for it to be worthwhile, otherwise were looking at sub grand mark.

Right guys...

I've been told by a mate that if I insure a car with a provisional, it'll become void and I'll have to reinsure when I get full. Is this right?

I've popped to the Quinn Direct site to get a quote on an 02 Focus Ghia 1.8 with Full UK <1 year, come up at £1185, which isn't too bad I think, but I am 22, which probably helps.

I'm still not sure what car to go for. I do like the Focus, but I'm not going to come across this amount of money for a long time, so I want to get it right first time :) The Focus does look nice, but I'm sure I can get more car for similar money or even less!

One of the reasons why the Focus holds its value is simply because it's so good!

Try the Admiral group for insurance - I found them to be rather cheap for me

As for alternatives, look at the Mk 4 Astra. It's really not that bad a car - not as good as the Focus, but close and cheaper. Get the SXI, SRI or GSI though as it has far better suspension. Avoid the 1.6 8v engine too. It's far far far better than the Mk 3!
