I have a million and one old school VB and C++ books at home and finally I've decided it's time to start learning to code. Speaking to some coders at work they have said just learn asp.net (as I need to build a site at some point) so would it be worth starting with asp.net? Also do I need to learn HTML before leaning asp.net?

Ideally I would like to be able to make some webpages and also would like to be able to code small apps and stuff. Beauty of where I work is I can move across to our development team if I have a good enough knowledge so I guess further down the line possible career move.
