Nikeair, isn't it easier to divide by 10 then multiply by 7? That's how how I always work out a percentage that like that. Or am I missing a reason why it needs to be 7 in the first place in this example?

The reason its 7 is to do with the 70% part, so if he wanted to know 40% it would be 60 or 6 all thats happening is 100%-30% =70%

It seems to me that his question was only actually answered by me. He asked how much he needs if he wants to keep £500 after loosing 30%. You can only times by 0.7 if you know the amount you need in the first place. Otherwise you're picking out random numbers till you get £500 left over.

No, just divide by 0.7.

70/100 is 0.7, so it takes that whole step out
