Don't lynch me... Half life 2 - whats the big deal?

I remember HL with all the hype.

To me, HL1 wasnt that great. Not a lot new. A boring storyline, dull puzzles and the last 4-5 levels are totally crap. The best part was when you faced off against the military for the first time.

HL2 was ok. Better than the first. HL2:EP1 was poor, however EP2 was a lot better.

I played pacman yesterday, I could understand what the big deal was.

Exactly. People have to remember it was released in late November 2004 but also had a 5 year development time. It's an OLD game and I think it stands its grounds pretty well against today's next generation games.

HL1 reputation as the "daddy" of FPS takes on a more literal interpretation when you think about the kids that sprung from its loins...and how famous they were etc

For me it wasn't any one gameplay element or "wow" moment that made HL2 great, it was more the thing as a whole; loads of little small things that added to create a great expierence.

Great atmosphere, characters and story, if you take those things out or find you don't really like them I can definately see how others would think it's a tad boring, gameplay wise.

HL1 was just amazing at the time and blew me away. I also loved apposing forces and blueshift.

HL2 was an amazing engine but I never actually clicked with the story and found it slightly disapointing.

HL1:

A survival horror, in which you play an unassuming chap who's as surprised as anyone that he manages to save the world

HL2:

Post-apocalyptic war game with squad based elements, where you play the legendary invincible hero 'Free Man', striking down hordes of hapless zombies and chimps in gas masks. Also physics puzzles.

People often think that HL2 is some kind of sequel to HL1. Clearly, they are unrelated.

HL2 was the first game where I could remember the NPC's names.

Honestly up until then 5 seconds after I met an NPC they were just a computer screen with arms that dolled out missions, in HL2 they were people! they had character and what's even more shocking... I LIKED THEM!

Ah I forgot about the expansions on HL1.

The ability to play the same story from a different perspective was awesome! If you add in the PS2 version with HL:Decay then you have 4 different ways of viewing the story :)

Half-Life 2 is brilliant, if you didn't like it you're probably one of them idiots who think Halo is one of the best FPS series going.

Guess i'm one of those idiots who thought Halo better than HL2, HL2 did nothing to FPSs (neither did Halo) but imo it was a better game overall.

Generic is the last thing I would call HL2.

So it doesnt have a general storyline with long overly-drawn-out sections (yawn car, yawn hovercraft thing, yawn going up the tower slowly at the end) ?

And as with most fps games, you get "the" gun and the rest of the game becomes entirely trivial, except this one doesnt ever run out of ammo.....

Also, the amount of fanatical fanboys in this thread is amusing.

So it did nothing for you, that doesn't make it generic.

Also, the amount of fanatical fanboys in this thread is amusing.
This thread? Seems like more have said they didn't rate it so highly tbh.

He might have been referring to the halo comment but it may seem hes a bit miffed at the amount of people who like the game.

Now the 'anti fanboy' comments. Argh! leave this stuff out

I loved HL1 and liked 2, but for me the episodes have just run out of steam ;)

I was hoping valve would dump the HL thing and make a completely new game as it is getting stale.

Its probably making them a lot of money so I imagine they may stick with it with a another episode (3) and may be a Half Life 3 in a completely new engine in 2010 or something.

Good & immersive storyline with innovative puzzles coupled with large variety of enemies and weapons means it's seldom boring.

It's not for everyone though.

i agree HL2 wasn't worth the hype that came before i was so annoyed i couldnt play it as i had no net on release so steam wouldnt let me play it when i got net a year later i was so disapointed with it. so boring.
