Hi all,

I have a 20 minute presentation next week on the current and future challenges of the Landfill & Aftercare Business for a trainee management job next week and was just wondering, on the off chance if anyone worked in this industry and could give me a few pointers?

I have no experience on the above, so I've just been reading, think I've got a few good things to discuss, but as always you always worry yourself wondering what the interviewers are expecting you to mention, how much time should you dedicate to certain parts and so on.

So any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Act like you're Tony Soprano. He was a waste management expert. That'll impress them.

My dad would have a field day with that presentation as he was Senior Waste Management Officer for the Angus region before he retired and was dealing with the reduction of waste going to landfill. I guess things that go hand in hand with that is the gas levels associated with the landfill (I'm in consultation with the council with regard to a steading conversion I'm in the process of working on near an old landfill site) and the way it creeps through the soil to surrounding areas.

Hi,

Yes, I've been reading a lot about the gas production in Landfills, how its monitored, collected and then utilised.

I think I've got a good grasp of the current environmental issues/impacts of running a Landfill, now I need to read about the aftercare of landfills.

I also think I need to read up more on the business aspects, like costs etc as this is actually my 2nd interview with this company although not the same role and I remember last time only mentioning the environmental issues, they obviously want to be environmentally friendly as much as they can, but their still a company and so being cost efficient is important.

All of the waste in the asbestos industry goes to landfill if that helps? No one has really come up with a better alternative.

Thanks for the replies.

I hate doing presentations for interviews, although with my last one, it was at least a topic of my choosing, not got as far as I'd like with this one today, going to take a break and start fresh tomorrow I think.

Going to get this finished today as I'm slightly stressing myself out about it and need time to research the company, how I plan to answer the usual interview questions and to come up with a few questions myself.

After doing some more reading, I think the biggest issues in this business is the fact that landfill waste is reducing (which is a good thing for the environment I guess, not so much for the companies who run them though!) and the period of aftercare likely to be substantially longer than expected, increasing costs.

talk about how you plan to send it all to the moon.

on a space elevator

from a developing nation to keep health and safety costs down

if that dont impress them then how about just burning it all , call it carbon neutral through a loophole in the law and then sell the carbon credits by force to those developing nations

Think I'm just going to have to talk at half my normal speed considering I've only got 10 mins worth of material :o

Can't think of anything else to put it and I've been working on this the whole weekend and now the F1 is about to begin.

Landfill and aftercare........ Hmmm tricky one.

How about approach it from the other way as in not going from the bottom up, try the top and down.

Examples to address...

When can the land be developed on after the landfill site has been closed?
How long or what can we do to maximise the time the land can be reusable?
How long will the site be open before full?
How big is the site?
What environmental impacts will the site bring to the local community?
Is there any other alternatives to land fill in the region?

Blah blah...... :D

By the way I don't have clue about waste management. :p

Thanks for the reply. I've tried to limit what I've put so far to the 'challenges' of the Landfill and Aftercare business, I've got no choice really but to expand on everything I've done so far I think, even if its not strictly related to the challenges.

Definitely read that as Anus region...
