Doom 3 modded overshadows iD Software’s RAGE – New drooling screenshots

I dont think Rage will look better...

I agreed with this (taken from that link

"Doom 3 can look miles better with some implementation of current graphical mods. In the end a “new engine” is basicly a massive update on the previous, rage and crysis 2 are more of a step back for console optimization not better or “new”"

I think until we see the PS4 and Xbox 720 or something, games will look no better on PC

I think the quote from that link is a load of toss tbh. :) IdTech5 has far more improvements over 4 than simply console optimisation if you take the time to read up what's gone into it.

Carmack has already said that they've built this engine with the future and next gen in mind. They'd have to be monumentally stupid to spend four years creating an engine for the current gen when it's approaching it's EOL.

^ maybe a lot more can be done with the engine then. To me it doesnt look like something that ID has been working on for 4 years.

It does look nice but not revolutionary. I think the BF3 (Frostbit 2 engine?) looks way better

A year after Doom 3 was released they scrapped the project they were tackling at the time since it wasn't hitting the mark, and then they began development on Rage. So, at least six years work.

It just looks like the new Mega Texture stuff has taken too much from the rest of the engine, or at least in Rage (time constraints?). There seems to be a lot of really low-poly models around using the new smoothing style which makes objects look laughable, a good percentage of the textures are fairly to very low quality and should not be seen as much as they are in a game of this caliber. Then the lighting effects/post processing all seems to be pretty poor in comparison to most other AAA titles that have come out over the past year.

I think a big part of this is not the engine as such but more of Rage being the issue, if you want 60 fps (consoles) with Rage's scale you need to make some pretty major sacrifices as the hardware is so old now! Yes MW2/3 are both 60fps and don't have the same texture issues etc but they have a much smaller playing area and scale along with probably some of the best written code around due to the same code being used for the past 4 years or so? :p They know that engine in and out and know how to push it to its boundaries where as it looks like Rage has really been a learning experience for id and hopefully its something they will learn from.

I still think Rage is a good game with some interesting ideas and fairly good delivery apart from in the graphics which is probably just from lack of time and not enough understanding of the engine.

ahhh poo, cant find my doom 3 cd-key or multi-player key anywhere, I had it written down and put in the cd wallet along with my disk (original case got destroyed by my 18month old son) :D

And when people start modding Rage it'll look better still.

It's a silly comparisson to make, Cinematic mod looks better than Portal 2. Modded Morrowind can look better than Oblivion. The modding community will always produce great looking results given enough time.

Except Carmack has pointed out that idTech 5 is a very hard engine to mod - it's going to limit it to a much smaller potential pool of modders.

just be aware that a lot of people dont use just one mod they use various mods combined to get it looking like they do.

I imagine they are regretting their decision to go so far down the mega texture route. But ah well.

It was Tim Willits that said that, not Carmack. ;) And as I understand what he said, it will be difficult to make total conversion mods for the game, adding updates and small snippets of new content should be quite possible. Megatextures will take a long time to produce for your average PC CPU, hence why Id use farms to generate them.

I don't know where that's stopped people before though. There's lots of determined professional mod teams. It may put some people off, but it doesn't detract from the efforts of those that aren't.

I got Doom 3 free with a gfx card or something I think got the discs here anyway but never installed or played, is it worth it? I heard bad things about it at the time so never bothered.

Yeah! It's a little old fashioned now, thats maybe part of the charm. IIRC the perfected mod allows proper resolutions (D3 was limited to 1680*1050 wasn't it?), it's been a while since I've touched it
