DOOM 4 ANNOUNCED YAY

I enjoyed Doom 3 to the end, the atmosphere was great with decent headphones and the audio patch?, not sure what it was called.

I think the flashlight was supposed to be separate from the gun so you couldn't just go through the whole game with it on.

I thought Doom 3s graphics were awesome and the game is so tweakable (along with the weapons etc.). Ran very smoothly on my system and yes I admit it made me jump as I played in pitch black room with headphones! One of the best mods was the flashlight mod which ductaped a light to each weapon.

However to me its biggest failing is its rubbish AI. The scripted demon-actions are horrible. I hope in Doom 4 they have intelligent demons that actually stalk you, dont appear in the same place after each reload etc.

Youre walking along a dark corridor weapon ready and hear something following you, you look around and briefly in the light of your weapon-flashlight you see a shape run behind a wall...u turn around and keep walking and hear footsteps (and the odd growl) again...this time it sounds like 4 or five things are coming.....

That sort of thing!

Doom I and II was released on 20+ platforms

While true, Doom was originally developed for the PC. It was only the ripsnorting success it enjoyed which resulted in it being ported to other platforms.

Personally I thought Doom3 was great, and some (not all) of the critisisms it received were a bit petty I thought. Yes, at default settings it is quite dark - but you can tweak r_gamma, r_brightness etc as much as you want! I actually found Halflife2 more of a problem on my setup, as there was a maximum limit you could set the brightness to, which was still too dark to read all the 'test' lines of text in the menu on my monitor! The flashlight thing was a fundamental part of the game mechanics; it makes you think more about whether you really need to pull it out and risk getting caught without a gun at the ready. May as well stick god mode on if we're gonna start modding the game to allow flashlight+gun at the same time :/

Doom 3 was a really good game. It was a huge leap from previous Doom 1&2 (equally as good). Amazing graphics for the time (still looks good), good gameplay and scary (especially at the beginning - I jumped out of my seat) It was part of the Doom series - what else could you expect from Doom other than corridors, monsters and a chainsaw???

That said if Doom 4 is too similar to Doom 3, I will probably not get it. I can't see how Doom 4 will be a leap forward like Doom 3 was from Doom 2. Unless of course they come up with a brilliant multiplayer - that has yet to be seen/proven.

Other than Prey and Quake 4, I can't think of a single game that used the Doom 3 engine. Weird that, the engine was amazing. Playing through Quake 4 at the moment and the use of light still looks fantastic.

ET: Quake wars is the only other one I can think of.

I can't say I am looking forward to Doom 4 as I am other games however I will still give it a shot. I enjoyed Doom 3 but echoing what others have already said it does get too repetative and predictable.

My big problem with the game was the engine more preciesily the movement and physics of it.

It felt so clucky as if you where stuck in the Big Daddy suit. You could chuck grenades about 3 meters and the walking speed was painful. I found the whole experience almost claustrophobic. This may be a biproduct of realistic gameplay/physics, it was improved in q4 but still there.

With all that said, it had some amazingly good points, the lighing effects being one of them, it really did have some scarey moments, something few games achieve. I completed the game, but would struggle to do it all over again.

well i hope story is good as all story so far been that they made teleporter that lead to hell and monster came out of it

To be honest when i played doom1 and 2 i didn't care about the story anyway even if there was one as i cannot remember as i manly played it for mutiplayer.

Back in those days "story" was irrelevant. You were there, with a gun, and there were things to kill.

I thought that Doom3's story was pretty reasonable, for a sci-fi horror/fantasy setting. I've seen films made from far worse.

I would also like to fight the Cyberdemons (a couple of them preferably) with convential weapons, in a large area. I would also like to see some damage physics, i.e. if I fire rockets at certain areas, I want bits of meat flying off, or the monster stumbling or something.

Another thing I miss is the more biblical style of demons we saw in the original Dooms; I find that is more effective somehow. I'm not calling for a drastic change from Doom 3, but maybe some goat horns or something, lol.
