Doom's 30th Anniversary

I first played the freeware version some years later - about 1998. I played so much that I started to dream in "Doom Motion": unable to look up or down, and going in straight lines for long periods of time before abrupt changes in direction.

Wow! 30 Years old. I remember spending ages getting linked up for co-op with a mate via modem, we had great fun and big telephone bills. The joy of the original Dooms was the bodies stayed where you killed them so you could wander around and admire the carnage afterwards.

Unreal, was the first game with amazing visuals for me, it looked ace on my Voodoo card!

It doesn't feel right though.

Because Half Life was 25 years ago, so there is only 5 years in it, yet feels like Doom was much older.

Shows you how fast games were progressing back then.

Doom was good, but Half Life was by far the most groundbreaking imo.
I remember being knocked out by the AI of the enemy troops; it doesn't seem like that side of games has progressed that much since then.

Yeah time flys, doesnt seem like 30 years!

The Masters Of Doom book is worth a read if anyone hasn't read it and the Game Engine Black Book Doom if you are interested in the technical side.

I never got into Doom like I did Quake 1, 2 and at an earlier age Wolfenstein 3D. Dunno why but the original games kind of passed me by.

I remember where I did work experience in the mid 90s the guys in IT were absolutely mad for it, that and the Spice Girls, different era.

I remember buying my copy in a basement computer fair on Tottenham Court Road one Sunday morning around that time. was amazing to run at the time, and play, literally game changing. My mind I had 3 game changing Games I ever played - The original Elite, for me around 86, then Doom 93 and then WOW in 2004. all were like amazing for their time and just opened up something completely new I hadn't seen on PC before.

Quake 2 was pretty good as well, although that was 4 years after Doom.

The first XCOM game was 1994 so one year after Doom.

Original Syndicate 1993.....

Underworld was truly groundbreaking.

The world's first true 3D game.

I was absolutely enthralled by it when I first played it.

Stunning at the time.

I remember getting it at the games show at Earl's Court...

Remember asking them how much and they said whatever you want to pay.

Didn't really know what shareware was and the fact I got it for a very small sum literally blew my mind at the time!
