I had a young chap knocknig the front door last night asking if I wanted to buy art work. I said no I wasn't interested plus it looked pretty ****. He said I am just trying to sell paintings to fund my course and to make people happy.

Now I consider myself a charitable person, I give in a needy situation and I will buy something of this nature if I thought it was good enough to hang up someplace rather than stuff in the garage and flog at a car boot for half the price.

The thing is every September/October we get random foreign (as they speak bad broken english, this guy was Asian sounding not sure where abouts though. We have had Polish, Greek and Macedonian) people come knocking. It seems to have picked up over the years and its kind of intimidating having someone giving you some form of sob story on your door stepp. Its basically in my view begging from door to door.

How widespreed is this door to door student/begging tactic?

We had a young Czech girl before Xmas last year and tbh she was asking £15 for paintings and if you'd have seen them.. they were absolutely stunning... there was a brilliant picture of this little dog and woman in a chair looked like something that should have been in a gallery tbh!

we sometimes have people that have recently been let out of the nick and are trying to get their lives back on track selling stuff for door to door companies. usually comes in handy as their selling house cleaning products at average prices.

See I'm quite cynical, in that if I ever get someone coming to the door selling paintings that are stunning, I don't know why but I get suspicious, I guess it's after having a guy at a bus stop in manchester who was a beggar try and sell me some pictures he had drawn by hand, they were brilliant. Except it was plain and clear they were photocopied.

I asked him and he said yeah, I photocopied them so I didn't ruin the originals. Hmmm ... I apologise for my cynicism, but sometimes I can't help but be suspicious.
 
I was round my girlfriends house and an eastern european (I think he was polish) knocked at the door. He was begging for money for his sisters operation of some sort. Right.... i'm sure....

It's just plain ****ing rude.
 
We get a few, though earlier this year a Gypsie woman was at the door with her paper flowers, talking Gypsie (man it's odd). I told her to go away, she stepped closer and I shut the door, it totally decapitated all her 'flowers' too.

She stood there for a good few minutes afterwards muttering, guess that Gypsie curse was a good one. However my Xbox360 is still working so it can't have been powerful.
