Dorian Gray

Its a film of the Oscar Wilde story of Dorian Gray.
Um...difficult to explain more without it being spoilers
Its a great story though, dealing with many moral issues such as vanity, envy, lust, decadence, the nature of sin, the shallowness of appearances and so on. All thrown in with a nice demonic twist and a guy who is seemingly indestructible, immortal and unable to be injured.
You do know they already had
Hurd Hatfield, George Sanders?? However, if it's anywhere near as good as the 1945 version then it'll be worth a trip to the cinema, looks like it will be good.You do know they already had
Yeah I've seen that one, but I kind of meant a modern telling of it.
This is the movie James Cameron will wish he had made.
The story is far too unspectacular for him.

I watched it as studied DG as a text in A Level Eng Lit.
Anyone who has seen the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen should know the background of DG.
Should be an interesting film, one to wait for I think, not enamoured by any of the leads :/

I was a bit disappointed. Colin Firth was very good as one would expect as Lord Henry, Ben Barnes was mediocre as Dorian - not good looking enough and nowhere near the charisma. Whoever played Basil looked the part too.
Some things seemed odd though. They made clear the rivalry between Henry and Basil for Dorian's affections, yet whilst there was at least one clear encounter between Dorian and Basil there wasn't one between Dorian and Henry. Dorian went away for 30 odd years and came back after the WWI but never saw Henry in all that time when the book makes clear they were spending summers abroad doing things Victorian gentlemen would be expected not to do together.
Dorian then went on to partner up with Henry's non existant suffragette daughter, infuriating Henry and ruining their friendship, culminating in a big fight at the end.
What disappointed me the most however, was the notable lack of sattire from Henry which made it from the book to the film
The film would have been good in it's own right, but straying so far from such a great book was highly disappointing to me.

Ah right I didn't realise Dorian Gray was a character in that. I think they should have used Dominic Cooper or someone who can do a character with charisma or at least play a character from a different age. He was good as Earl Grey in The Duchess.
Either way it doesn't excuse straying so far from the book in my opinion

Watched this tonight, guessed it wouldn't have long left to run so figured I'd better get out there.
Really enjoyed it. A split from the normal kind of films I'd go to watch (Gamer
) but I just liked the story.
Didn't realise the League connection... Must watch that again.
Sounds like I'd be a bit let down if I knew anything about the original story?

Well I saw this sunday...
It has to be the worst film I have seen at the cinema...
There was no pace to the film, no tension. I had no desire to see how it ended as it was obvious from the start. I actually had to concentrate to stay awake.
Colin Firth was watchable, but the rest of the cast forgettable.
A big dissapointment really.

Why do people keep talking about th League of Extraordinary Gentlemen?
There is no connection between the two movies or stories besides the usage of the character.
I might go and see this, though I am more likely to wait till it comes out on DVD, it just strikes me as a good story being dumbed down for the hollywood generation.
