Dorking

I'm a boring fart and not really into nightlife any more.

For shopping the GF is going to head into Guildford... I'm going to stay in the garden with a pint :D.

I grew up in a village and have spent 3 years living on the edge of Southampton near a main road so were quite looking forward to going back to somewhere quieter.

I get the impression traffic is going to suck. Most of my customer site work will likely mean a trip on the M25 if not a train to London, but this was unavoidable really.

There's always hilarity with the giant (male chicken) too..

Yeah, that's the deal with the chicken? Its on the signs and things as well as that giant sculpture in the roundabout. It had a hat on when we first viewed the house! lol.

Im from Woking with Grandparents who live in the Dorking area, a bit quiet for my liking but some good pubs and walking/cycling routes from memory will try to dig up the pubs/food place names when I get home.

Yup, i live in leatherhead. Box Hill can be a nice cycle. I couldn't find the downhill trail that's apparently there, but its still fun to bomb it down the side off road at 43mph =D I keep meaning to visit leith hill too, as there is meet to be some nice trails there. Not much to do in leatherhead itself, but its easy to get to central London and Guildford. Epsom is a nice place to go shopping too.

Does anyone get the train from/through Dorking to London?

There seems to be a plethora of options. Dorking has 3 stations, and there are trains that run to Waterloo, Victoria and London Bridge. There all cheap as hell (£8.60 to central London, yes please!) but I wonder which is best/less busy for the times I will have to go into the City?

Fastest trains are the SWT trains from Dorking to Waterloo. Dorking Deepdene station goes from Reading/Guildford to Gatwick but it's a fairly infrequent service. I don't think you can get direct trains to London Bridge from Dorking.

Looking on National Rail the routes are:

Dorking Main - Waterloo
Dorking Main - Victoria
Dorking Deepdene - Redhill - Victoria
Dorking Deepdene - Redhill - London Bridge
Dorking West - Redhill - Victoria
Dorking West - Redhill - London Bridge

Deepdene and West are on the same line so the same routes make sense, although not all trains seem to stop at both stations. With Main and Deepdene being next to each other it makes sense to focus on those (I will be driving or getting the bus to the station).

It looks great because it means there's a train about once every 10 minutes, but its a bit to complicated to try and coordinate where to be in London to get the best train back.

OK, that's what I thought. The Redhill-London Bridge train will be rammed, I doubt you'd get a seat during the rush hours. Basically unless there's a problem with trains in and out of Waterloo, go there.

Some people aren't into quiet leafy suburbs, but I can't wait. Being able to open a window and hear birds rather than traffic, and jump on my bike and be in the countryside within 5 minutes. I've done city living, I've grown out of it now.

I'm a country bumpkin at heart :D
