I keep telling my team every match I join I'm a noob and they are fine with it unless we get some little child that likes to whine a lot.

Gahahah, I just did a match and we had two dcs. We managed to keep going and win the match but mainly because of a guy who was absolutely demolishing everyone. 55 kills 8 deaths as a spectre. INSANE.

Most of the community is pretty good but unfortunately whining in this game is pretty common place and across the MOBA scene as a whole -> "Always some one else fault".

The more games you play hopefully you'll move up the ladder a bit and hopefully those kind of players wont be as common.

While I wouldn't consider my self a 'pro' by any means I have some considerable amount of experience with MOBA games. DOTA2 at the moment has a balance issue with the characters current available, a great example would be Anti-mage.

At the moment I see a lot of complaining and calling him 'over-powered', while there is a patch this coming week to tweak his armour to 1, the main issue is the heroes that hard counter him such as Obsidian destroyer and Invoker are not in the game yet. I'am under the belief that Spirit Breaker and Silencer will be in the patch this week, this will go some way to containing him.

People discussing Spectre dominating teams past the 40+ minute mark this is due to her being "THE" hard carry of dota. If you watch any pro-games with a Spectre in; you may at times here the commentators talk about the "countdown" as pros often call it. This is the time it takes for a spectre to get a Vanguard and her ganking/farming should go through the roof.

The first 20 minutes in a Spectre game is crucial for the opposing team, you need to really sit on her and strangle the gold supply. A recent interview I will try to source had a Meet Your Makers player say that if your not considerably in-front of the opposing team with a Spectre in it by the 40 minute mark its practically over. A farmed Spectre is devastating as are most carry s but getting a Spectre to that point takes some considerable knowledge and at lower games some luck.

If I was to recommend a hero to begin with it would be Lich, a hero which does not require a good amount of farm to stay relevant all game. Has a devastating ultimate move and can regen/deny fairly easily.

Nice post.

Been playing the game for a while now and some good points there.

From personal experience this happens at almost every level of play :( (People always have bad games, someone playing bad is not necessarily a bad player. Sometimes it's hard to remember that when someone's taken mid and gone 0-6-0 at 15 minutes but it happens, especially when playing new heroes. That said I have raged at people in the past and will continue to in the future, especially with the current matchmaking system in place where you can come up against a team of 5 and have 2 people on your team who've never played the game before)

It's a team game and to play it really well requires not just communication and awareness, but also picking a good team balance, which rarely happens in pub games. You'll end up with double melee lanes and teams of 4 carries and a ganker etc. and the game will have been lost from the moment it started barring anything other than a miracle.

The best way to learn the game is to queue with friends, and if possible someone who's played the game a fair amount before. Playing against bad people teaches you so much less than playing against people who are far better than you. That's why I recommend watching live streams. Watching a 'pro' play other highly skilled players will show you strategies that work, and how to perform them.

Playing as lich is a really good shout for new players, but I'd recommend playing any support really. Levels are less important and you get to focus on seeing how the laning phase works without having to try and get every last hit. Learn to ward well and get good positioning in teamfights and map awareness before you start to play gankers and then finally carries, it pays off in the long run.

I've been playing Lina but from my limited experience I think she is great in the laning stages because she can annoy the opposition and she's fairly devastating in the mid game because she can wipe out almost any character with a full combo of her specials.

The problem comes in the late game where she's so fragile you can only gank if the opposing team has already been severely damaged. I've found myself just sitting on the sidelines late in the game as any time I try to engage I just get stunned/slowed and killed fairly quickly.

I'm looking for a new character to try this weekend so might check out Lich.

Or if Damien, Xonal and Gord want to just pick me a character to benefit the team I'm fine with that seeing as I've been playing with you lot the most. :)

I personally would not recommend the majority of support heroes. A support while on the surface looks simple the skills require a good knowledge of timings and situations more than most - warding, carrier buying and stacking creeps are very important as well.

Heroes which have a straight forward skill set, damage that scales well regardless of items and heroes which don't require much focus on regeneration I think are best.

Heroes such as Lich, Lion, Sven and Skeleton king I would recommend. Lich's damage while not amazing with out items still scales well into the late game, he can deny a creep to regenerate mana and his recommended items are generally considered to be pretty spot on for a new player in Dota 2.

On the topic of the community, like I said whining does happen at all levels but I found it to happen less the further you got up the ladder. I think one of the biggest issues with Pub games is people do not plan out lanes well and expect their hero to face roll everyone else. People do not seem to realise that heroes for the most part have counters, people are some times pigeon holed into lanes and then get the blame when they get smashed by another hero combo that counters them hard.

Team work is so very important in this game, if you watch 'pro' games you will see for the most-part nearly everyone of them has a teleport scroll nearly all the time. If a gank occurs you'll get instant teleports and assistance to help a team mate. Pubs put far too much emphasis on sitting in a lane and just constantly farm then as soon as a good player who's in the jungle or has the middle lane ganks when the opportunity arises it totally tilts the other team 9 times out of 10.

When in games try to give constructive criticism, do not barrage a team mate with abuse. It will only upset and tilt them and your team mates into performing badly or not listening but also often than not your going to tilt yourself. Either just ignore them or give constructive criticism, i know from experience this is far harder to follow than it is to type.

Early game Lina is definitely devastating, her harass is fairly good and if you have good team work her combo will often lead to a kill. For late game its always worth building towards an item such as a Guinsoo, so while your not doing the crazy mad damage you were..your crowd control still makes your a important part of the team. Being able to hex an hero as well as lay down your combo(stun) on the same/different target still makes you very valuable. Just make sure you do not initiate, your base health and strength are far to low to initiate.

Blood seeker is my weapon of choice most of the time. Love him as a character.

I always find myself on middle lane and can usually handle myself but there are some enemies which just harass me to hell and back.

Kaelsin, add on steam, there's a good group of us who play pretty much every night. Maybe you can join in and give us some tips/advice.

Got an exam on Thursday so currently revising for that, will be playing quite a bit more after Thursday so will add you. Like I said, no where near a 'pro' or close to that level, just watch a lot of games and been playing mobas for a while : )

Heroes such as Lich, Lion, Sven and Skeleton king I would recommend.

I'm not sure how it's translated to DotA from HoN, but lich lion and sven are all typically used as support in high level play. Supports allow you to learn how teamfights go and to see what other heroes do without being reliant on farm. Yes this means they dont normally scale very well and are normally squishy but that just gives added emphasis on things like positioning and map awareness. If someone new plays skeleton king odds are they aren't going to get decent farm and will be squishy regardless. Everything else you said I agree with, the game is hugely reliant on teamplay and coordination which you just don't get in a lot of pubs :(

Also I added gord and damien but if anyone else wants to add me http://steamcommunity.com/id/kitboh

I normally play with 1 or 2 mates so with a couple of others we can make teams of 5 and cut out the randoms.

Thank you for the replies guys, Damien I'll add you to steam I would like to get in on some teamplay with dota 2 :)

I have mainly been playing with Lina because of her stun. That and phase boots helps me survive most fights if I'm going to lose but I also find the stun extremely good for group last hit kills along with her flame breath.

If you still want keys try here

Edit: Ah you needed to have created an invite before the giveaway started...

Actually this is incorrect! So sign up if you want keys!!

The draw states that you needed to have signed up previous to the launch of the giveaway HOWEVER if you check the daily winners, there are a fair amount of winners with accounts only 1-2 months old.

The date for eligible accounts was changed from the date the draw started to the 12th December 2011 or something like that.

It says it on the first post in the thread realting to the draw.

Get your dirty hands off Lina!!!

She's all mine!!!:D

Lina is a great hero to learn to play mid with, and also if you build for it to learn how to use a blink dagger. Also, if you like her you may also like Lion who has a similar ultimate but slightly less damage and more crowd control.

I can't stop using HoN names for everything...

Played another game with Lina after that fairly disasterous one last night and changed my playstyle a bit.

Previously I've been trying to just not die too much and level up but I took middle, farmed until level 6 when I unlock my ult, then went on a ganking spree while everyone else was relatively weak. It's the first game I've played where I was out levelling everyone else and I managed to keep the other team's main carry out of the game.

Probably just a total fluke on my part but it made me think I've been playing the character all wrong.
