Hi all

My single built in oven has broken. I was looking at possibly getting a double built under oven. However, what I can't work out is whether a double built under oven needs a special base unit to sit in. Does anyone know?

Thanks

M.

normal oven size is 60 x 60.
compact oven is 45 x 60(w)
large ovens by miele and gaggenu are 72 x 75
HUGE ovens by miele are 60 X 90(w)
double oven is 90 x 60 (w)

I've been looking at this recently because we have a double built under and might swap it for a single.

The single ovens sit higher and as others have pointed out, aren't as large. Our double sits on a bracket right at the base of the unit, just above the plinth. Singles have blanking strips at the top and bottom so I assume their bracket is a little higher up.

I think a single oven housing is like this

Ours (double) doesn't have that bottom space or a base and the bracket is right at the level of the plinth.

The single measures in a 59cm high whereas the doubles measure in at about 70cm high.

I have a single oven, 59cm, but the base unit it sits in has a void space at the bottom with a blanking plate. So to fit a double oven i would need to take out the blanking plate and take out the shelf in the base unit which will give me the extra 11-12cm to fit the double oven (70cm)

EDIT: looks like grumpy beat me to it. :)

There's also the built under double oven which is 70 x 60. But I can't seem to find whether a new base unit would required or if the existing base unit that houses a single oven can be used.

Be careful and check measurements carefully as there is no normal size it seems when I was looking to do the same thing. In the end I got so confused and spent the money on a new Radio controlled car :-D she still moans our single oven is slow to heat up and to small....

The base unit on mine also has an empty void below the oven that did have a blanking plate over the front (until it dropped off!). Does this mean a double under counter oven would fit into what I already have? There is a wooden shelf between the base of the oven and the void space. I assume that can be taken out.

In my humble opinion built under double ovens are god awful.

While you do gain a separate grill you will sacrifice main oven space to do so. The result is that the main oven is usually only large enough to fit two trays in or one tray if for instance you are cooking a ruekey at christmas. They are nowhere near as large as a standard eye level built in double oven. As a result you gain slightly more total cooking volume but loose versitility to do so.

In addition I think you may find that the bottom oven is extremely low and you are unable to see into it unless you bend down. Getting things in and out can be a pain and its perfect height for little uns to get at.

In order to replace your single oven with a built under double oven you will need to remove the single oven housing entirely as the double oven will sit on its own feet and the plinth will run across the front of it.

In work I usually try and steer people away from built under double ovens as they do not offer very much when compared to a decent single oven. Look at some of the new models from hotpoint or NEFF who are doing huge capacity single ovens which will be cheaper than a built under double and offer more useable cooking space, as well as fitting into the exisiting oven housing unit.

Juts my 2p.

Lab Testing, repairing & building were my skills but fitting them inside a cabinet definitely not.
We built 60cm, 55cm and 50cm so you need to know what size you've already got in to replace it.
I'm pretty sure all the models I tested from other manufacturers were all of the same size so if you had a 60cm Hotpoint, a 60cm Bosch should fit in (but I wouldn't put money on it).
