I don't usually go with the ***s in titles, but this one needs it.

So after the speculation in this thread about Psyconauts 2, this has turned up:

Looks like Double Fine are getting their fans to finance the next game, and skipping getting the backing of a publisher. :D

$15 gets you beta and game keys for Steam, as well as bonus videos. Soundtrack, HD documentary for $30 and even more if you can go higher. :D
I'll certainly be putting $30 in at least, I'd love to go more, but can't afford it at the moment. :o

I'm guessing Notch was the $10000 (or likely more) contributor or something going from his tweets.

The article also mentions that Stacking is one of their PC games, so that'll be on it's way to Steam soon hopefully. :D

Me too.

The tide is turning.

Publishers can go **** themselves. They have been nothing but a tumour to the gaming industry for years anyway bar a few.

I hope this is a trend which continues.

The fact it is on Steam too just sweetens an allready AMAZING idea. No mention of consoles in site either.... SWEEEET.

Wow, they've almost hit $500,000 of the $400,000 target and it has only just started with 33 days left.

Gave them $30. Really want to see more adventure / platforming games being made.

Fees

What fees does Kickstarter charge?
If a project is successfully funded, Kickstarter will apply a 5% fee to the funds raised. If funding isn't successful, there are no charges.

Does Amazon charge any fees?
Yes. When a project is successful, Amazon will apply credit card processing fees, which work out to roughly 3-5%. For details on how the fee is calculated, please view the Amazon Payments fee details.

A big chunk of cash already gone but I suppose without it, they would have none I suppose.

A traditional publisher would want MUCH more than 10% as well as IP rights and Tim Schafers soul :)

I'll be contributing funds to this as well Psyconauts was a fantastic game (I just wish they would fix the memory leak issue for ATI video cards) and a joy to play.

I have to say though I find it shameful that Tim Schafer can't get a publisher to back him for this game given Schafer track record and some of the games he has been involved in.

At this stage, even with the fees, they're well over their limit and there's no sign of it slowing down yet. It's not so bad either for Kick-starter or Amazon who are essentially getting free money.

Also, average donation of $44 is pretty mad.

It is considering PC gaming is dead because we are all pirates... oh, wait..

Schafer says on their website they have pithced the idea but are being told Adventure gaming is "dead"?

Half a million dollars in less than 24 hours says otherwise :)

You see publishers?? PC gaming is NOT DEAD! Give us unique opportunities and great games and you will have success. Piracy is not killing the industry. Crap games are!

That guy sums it up for me.

Sadly his creative genius doesn’t translate into stellar sales figures. Not one of his games has gone on to sell in huge numbers, mostly barely even breaking even for the publisher.

He has a proven track record of making games that are humorous, quirky and different or interesting, however despite them all being regarded as cult classics over time, a publisher only wants the title to sell well within its first few months of release.

Tim Schafer games are like vintage wines… They mature and get better over time. Its really sad hardly anyone buys his games until its all too late and he’s then left without a publisher.. Brutal Legend was his last major released game, and whilst it was interesting, funny, well produced and played well, it essentially flopped which is a shame. Not as much as a shame as it was for ‘Grim Fandango’ Now that’s a game I purchased on release day as I did with Brutal Legend and Full Throttle, but Grim Fandango never deserved to fail in sales like it did….

Hopefully self funding and publishing will prove successful… As he is a masterful writer of some very interesting and creative works…. He’s got a good name in the industry sadly also known for having top games that simply don’t sell in big numbers…

Gamers just don’t see a truly good game when they see one I reckon.. : - ) good luck to them, donated $30…

$600k and rising. :D

If thats just a day, I bet it could hit 1 million before times up eaaaasily. Just goes to show how much fans know what they like, even when publishers are trying to feed them something else.

Sod it I gave them $100 :p I wish them good luck they have made some cracking games. I hope this one goes well too :D

amaze donated $15 these things need supporting. the video is awesome :) sausage in your face
