Double Glazing, Soffits & Fascias

To give you a rough idea the cost of materials for a semi, completely replacing the fascias its around £500-£600. Thats with white fascias and soffits, eves protectors, gutter and down pipe.

Fitting costs in the north a few years ago were £20 a meter. £5 a meter for down pipe. You could probably double this in the south.

Guessing they will also need to hire a tower, but some do it off a ladder platform.

And final quote in at £12k.

So, three quotes at £12k and one at £9k. Hmm. That cheap one seems too cheap compared to the others, but the company is very well reviewed.

Right, work begins tomorrow, which is the scheduled start date (always promising when work begins on schedule!).

Went with the £9.1k quote in the end, so hopefully won't regret it down the line.

Current double glazing is aluminium units in hardwood frames. Nearly all handles are corroded to the point of inoperation, some snapped off and several units are blown. Will be good to see how much warmer the house is without a knackered wood back door and also how much quieter it will be...

The fitters will have a nice bonus with the existing frames being alu .

I'm sure they will be just as good as the other companies. Did you find out which frame profiles they all used?

Edit; Just seen above they are all Rehau. You have nothing to worry about then, if its the same product used.

I usually get £80-£100 from a house full of alu windows. I usually strip all the rubber gaskets off so it goes through as 100% alu.

Last alu job I replaced was a couple of years ago so it could have dropped since.

I'd suggest using laminated glass in the French doors as this is one of the most common smash and grab entry points. With toughened glass which is what is commonly use it is so easy for them to break the glass and then be in and out in seconds.

.

Yep, best advice here.

Having new windows and doors in our renovated house, putting laminate in all downstairs windows and doors.

Hows the job coming along?

I always recommend it to my customers, at least in a patio and back door etc. It doesn't add that much extra to a job, but makes the house a lot more secure, adds thermal and sound proofing and gives some extra piece of mind. Just make sure you have fire escape windows and know where the door keys are for an emergency as it'll be hard to break out as well as in.

Glazing all done, 2.5 days for a 2 man team. Job well done except the cat flap is slightly on the wonk. I might look at loosening the screws and resetting its position.

Soffits and fascias to begin on the 11th April.

Good stuff. Yeah the cat flap probably just needs loosening and adjusting. Or possibly one of the holes reaming out a bit.

The weather is getting warmer now, but you should notice a difference next winter going from alu to pvc with energy efficient glass.
