Dovetail Cancel Flight Sim World

Same here. I refuse to be mugged off by this latest fad of getting people to pay to alpha/beta test games. I bet devs these days can't believe just how gullible the gaming community has become as they laugh all the way to the bank. I remember the halcyon days of when beta testing was free and, more often than not, you got yourself a free copy of the game upon release.
This.

It wouldn't surprise me if they end up abandoning Train Sim World due to the lack of uptake but TS2018 is safe according to the chatter on UKTrainsims forums.

Well they just announced another TSW iteration - West Somerset Railway, but no steam traction (this is a heritage line) and possibly the blandest first gen diesel loco - a Class 47. This will offer no challenge at all dragging 5 coaches at 25 MPH, though then again that's a good way of covering up shortcomings in the physics implementation.

Over at Avsim, they were postulating DTG are in hock to MS for over £1million for the rights they purchased to take over and develop the FSX code, so they will definitely need to up their train division sales to pay that.

i don't understand why anyone would expect a refund in situations like this. do they ask their devs for a refund of their wage. of course not that would be a stupid suggestion, but then stupid people want a refund of their money when the game doesn't get fully released.

what do you think you're doing when paying money for games like this? do you think your one time purchase is all they need to get the game complete? jesus some people

Well yes, that's how they sold it. They didn't ask for a subscription. However I'm also a pragmatist and realise that what I signed up to, while it has to change on the basis of my contract, may never become the game I expect or want it to be. I'm not sure if DG made promises the final game would contain some feature it that is not yet present? If so they are probably in breach of contract and should give some recompense.

Whatever...

Anyhow the money is gone and I don't bear the now redundant devs/programmers any ill will, my ire firmly directed at Dovetails management policies. Those of us who've been around their train sim projects probably should have known how this would end up - a 70% complete "fire and forget" title and then it's dropped and they move on to something else and pocket the money.

Reading on the flight sim forums the failure may be more complex than the public version from DTG. Seems to be a great deal of antagonism in the flight sim industry and in the user base which greatly inhibited DTG from making the inroads they presumably were hoping for. The particular elephant in the room being LM's P3D that most people are playing strictly against the terms of the "student" licence they purchased (any mention of that is quickly hushed up at Avsim or FS, though).

Whether Dovetail were a bit naive in that respect or the lack of end enthusiasm and ultimately sales tool them by surprise and threw their business plan off so much, guess we will never know. More than the money it's the sense of frustration this could have gone on to be a worthy 64bit successor to FSX, particularly as they were playing with career mode and even possibly a jetliner.
