Downhill Ice Skating

I can imagine people quite easily losing balance, falling over, and essentially dying.
Skiing you'll land in soft snow, stop and you have a decent surface area to balance, this, it'd be near imposibble to balance and you'll land on rock hard ice and keep sliding downhill.

Therefore, it's a super extreme sport. We can add razorblades and other sharp things to the surface to make it more dangerous :D

hmmm... I seem to remember that theres an ice rink in doncaster that is split level, with two ice ramps.. one for down and one for up, and going down.. is nerve racking at best...

Why not just use the toboggan(sp?) runs that are already in place? They use blades aswell, they have just stuck them to a sledge.

stopping wouldnt be a problem, landing on 2 thin pieces of metal would.

1. if you have ever ice skated before you would know how hard it is to balance on a moving skate. now think of it travelling at around 50mph+ then think of lift off and gravity adding to that speed in downward force.

2. the skate would likely break

3. your angle would probably break from the skate forcing it hard left/right

4. the impact to the floor would be so intense you would likely cut into the floor

5. there wouldnt be enough space to stop. (ski'ers have snow at the bottom to create a friction on the surface) a skater requires ice only therefore has no friction other than sharp turns to escape the gforce behind the skater.

I could go on but I think thats enough reason to call this idea a day.
Ignoring that there is no jumping involved..

1. It's a piece of urine. Ice Hockey training involves jumping over obstacles (and each other for a laugh/dare devil.)

2. Better materials would be used than on your average crap blue-plastic-with-cheapest-steel-blade skate.

3. See 1. Balance is completely easy, and better ankle support.

4. This is the only point that hold water (pun!)

5. Create a large flat area to stop.. duh.

:o if you read the posts further down instead of jumping the gun you would have realised that I thought he was refferring to skating with a giant ramp at the bottom as to current skiers on a slope. not down hill racing.

I'm guessing you've only ever been on the ice a couple of times from that. It's not difficult to balance on a moving skate at all, which is why figure skaters exist :p.

wow another to not read the whole thread :p

I said I thought the op was reffering to this sort of sport:

if he was do you really think a skater would have a chance!?

Your words, which I quoted, were "how hard it is to balance on a moving skate", nothing to do with going downhill. Perhaps you should learn to read yourself.
