Gimp is good, but for simple stuff paint.net is easier to use (IMO).

I'd agree.

I think Paint.NET has a better and cleaner interface that is easier to understand. Gimp, in my mind, is trying to be as much a clone of Photoshop as possible whereas Paint.NET is like a supercharged version of the classic Paint.

Installing Gimp requires the GTK+ be installed? Which could be considered an equivalent of .Net?

And I would have thought most PCs would have .Net installed in some form or other for Windows stuff anyway?

I didn't realise, don't remember installing it. In that case it comes does to what you want to do with images. Gimp is more powerful but Paint.net is easier to pick up. Both have plugins to add features etc

You get it from hardware shops, comes in tins, you can't download it.
