Download Speed Drops to <1Mb when Desktop Computer is on?!

Hey Guys,

I recently spent almost £1500 on a kick-ass gaming setup, however the last two weeks I've had massive problems with the internet connection and speed on this new system...

I have Sky Fiber Optic broadband, and when my desktop PC is switched off (or disconnected from the network) I get around 25-30 Mbps download speed on my laptop and other devices. However, for the past two weeks as soon as I connect my desktop PC, my speed drops to less than 1mbps on the laptop, and even less on the desktop. The desktop also has connection issues, keep sdropping out or keep saying 'limited' or 'no internet connection'.

I think the issue may be spyware / malware, but have run Malwarebytes and Spybot S&D which haven't found anything major.

I don't think it's an issue with the router or wireless channel etc as it's all working find on other devices, until I connect my new system.

I have tried running CMD and typing netstat -o -n to see what process IDs are using bandwidth and found that a couple of PIDs show in CMD window but are not listed in task manager... Could these be hidden processes?

Any advice or help would be REALLY appreciated.

Many thanks,

Sounds obvious but a duplicated IP could cause this, guessing youve checked that?

Otherwise you could run wireshark on the desktop and see what that shows, you'd see traffic to any suspicious looking IPs in there

Hi all,

Thanks for the responses so far...

Still having major issues. Cables are all fine, although I don't have any knowledge on linux? Is this easy to do?

A message has popped up occasionally saying there is an IP conflict, so I've typed into CMD:

ipconfig release

ipconfig renew

Is this right? Doesn't seem to make much difference though. Why do I keep getting IP conflicts and how can I prevent this from happening without having to keep releasing / renewing the ip?

Thanks again

This is killing me! The most frustrating part is that I'm paying Sky extra for Fibre Optic 40Mbps, to have had speeds like this for the past two weeks...

Have you tried another cable and/or port on the router?
Have you tried the laptop via this wired connection to the router with the desktop also wired or unwired to the router to see if the problem still occurs?
Try fixing an IP address for the desktop....pick a number well in excess of what normally is handed out eg 192.168.1.199 if the routers IP range is 192.168.1.2 -> 192.168.1.250 etc.

I've not been able to connect via a cable as the router is too far away (I'd need about 30ft of cable!... Or to drill a hole through the ceiling...) But as I said, the laptop connects perfectly on the wireless network with DL speeds of 25-30 Mbps...

How does one fix, or even select an ip address?

Thanks again,

Have you wired the laptop to the router and tested it with the desktop connected via wifi?

Just booted in safe mode - No difference, still shocking DL speeds.

What might this suggest? I've also tried an alternative wireless dongle, updated drivers for my current wireless card, updates MOBO drivers...

InQ, What will wiring the laptop to the router tell us? What should I be looking for?

Thanks again

Show us a screenshot of your Taskbar (expanded)

Does Task Manager show that your Network usage is high on the Desktop?

ok this might sound strange. but i had the same probs as you are having,

did your pc / main board come with a killer net work card / software installed, it turned out i had to re run the software fot the network card.

to this day i have no idea why it did it to my network,

i am also with sky using the small black box router ( cube like one )

**UPDATE**

Having still had no luck, I have just completely re-installed windows, and am STILL having the same problem! I've tried the wireless card which still gave speeds of <1mb. I then uninstalled it and removed it and tried my old wireless USB dongle, which gave speeds of about 1-2mbps (a little faster) but still no where near the speed that my laptop is getting on the same wireless network (Approx 25-35mbps). I am now getting perfect speeds on the laptop, even when the desktop of connected to the network, but can't seem to get over 2mbps on the desktop, even after a clean install of windows etc... Gavindo, what do you mean by a killer network card?

Any help would be reeeeally appreciated...

Thanks again

No way to run a cable from router to PC. Although I didn't think about trying Powerline plugs. Will go out first thing in the morning and get a pair. Are there any drawbacks to using these if these provide a solution?
