I have researched it, and am an ex customer. You just tell them you don't want any of the TV gubbins and they won't do the in house setup. So essentially you just get the internet package for £15 per month.
As with many things the website is a generalisation of their main set of products, if you ring up and speak to a sales person they can often tweak things to suit you

The router is on lease so you don't actually pay for it, they expect it back when you cancel the contract. It's not really free because you never actually own it, however the rental is £0I wonder , I don't need the "free" router , so they can remove that and charge me £12.99 a month

Do they actually request it back ? Sounds abit extreme to me .
9 times out of 10 they do, and they threaten to charge you the full price for the router.

O2 Box is the same, it's actually about £85 to buy the o2 box III from thomson resellers. which you'd theoretically have to pay o2 if you couldn't return it.
This is also why a lot of people get DoA/faulty o2 boxes, there's a chance you'll get a reclaimed one that may have had coffee or wotnot spilt on it in a previous life and it's just been cleaned up

Heh , good job I kept the crappy usb modem which Tiscali gave me
you get to keep the router with sky, as you do with most isps when you signup for 12 months.
the notable exceptions are o2 (assume be, not sure) and virgin where you get to keep the equipment as long as you're a customer. i've got a freepost label to affix to my o2 router if i leave them.
