I have a Dell machine which i dont use much anymore, so i would like to know if Linux would be ok on there, plus if someone can provide me with the direct download link as when i go onto the linux site, i cant find the right thing :S

Which build of Linux? There are loads. I'm installing Ubuntu 7.10 32bit on my desktop now, also installed on brothers laptop earlier on today. There's Kubuntu which is designed for lower specced machines (Celeron, <512MB memory etc)

Google search for ubuntu

You're confusing Kubuntu, a version of Ubuntu that used the K desktop environment, with Xubuntu, a version that uses the extremely fast xfce environment.

As for your main question, .Kencs, a Linux operating system is not one thing, it's a collection of hundreds or thousands of individual packages that are lashed together with an installer to form a Linux distribution. There are hundreds of distros, but you can concern yourself with only the big players. I recommend Ubuntu, it's what I use. You might also want to try OpenSuSE.

thanks mate. i have never used it before. is it easy to use?

There's definitely a learning curve if you're coming from Windows. It's relatively easy to use but you should read up as much as you can so that you're familiar with the terminology and methods. :)

Somehow I manage to use it every day and I'm none too bright. ;)

kewl, i've downloaded the .iso file now so will put that on the dell tomorrow...il let u know if it went thru the computer room window too :D lol

cheers all

Right, I'm about to put Linux on the Dell PC, BUT....I can't find a single blank CD anyway...and can't be bothered to go to the shop...Can i install it WITHOUT putting it on CD?

You can... but you'll need to use a different installer. Have a look at something called Wubi.

http://wubi-installer.org/

I would really suggest you find a CD from somewhere, as you do get more control over how the installation runs with the traditional method, but if you're really stuck then Wubi will allow you to install Linux from within Windows.

Alternatively, you could use a Virtual Machine, but you'll be running Linux from within Windows, which means that you'll be using much more resouces just to get the operating systems up and running. Using Wubi (or the "normal" installation method), you won't be reliant upon loading Windows before you start loading Linux.
