Ok I can pick one up tonight for $400 + tax. 40 gb version.

Whats the downsides of having a US ps3.

I assume the DVD region will be locked to R1 and this cant be changed.
Blurays are regioned as well yes? AB&C. what is the availibity of these in the UK is it going to mean i cant just got to tescos and pick myself up the latest film?

As for Games I am told they are un-regioned is this correct? if it is true will this remain the case?

I've already picked up my Zune and some other toys and tonight im going to buy some Wii controllers for a freind and the PS3 box just looks tempting.

(no hating pls I already own 2 360s)

Yes SD DVD will be region restricted to R1 and bluray will be resticted to region A.
Have a look here... http://bluray.liesinc.net/ it includes all A and B region movies, so you know which UK ones you will be able to play on it, US ones can be bought of the internet very easily. At the minute any game from anywhere will play on the console. The only real downside is the warranty, so if it breaks you may have problems

As it's a 40GB version there will be no back compatability with PS2 games, but then they would need to be US games to run on a US system. 'Tis the one regret I have about picking up a japanese 60GB on launch.

I bought an 80Gb version late last year and so far haven't had any issues with it regarding game compatibility (I've got both US and UK games for it), as for the possibility of games becoming region locked is anyone's guess at the moment!
Like dead_parrot mentioned my only concerns would be the warranty, but I'm hoping that what I've saved in buying it from the states will balance out the cost if it ever fails.

This is my first console (been a PC gamer since early 90's) and so far I've been very happy with it :D

Downsides to a US PS3: it's fat, makes annoying noises, and tries to exert its presence on other consoles.

After a night in a out in houston that just made me LOL in my hotel room.

"Would you like cheese on your soup"

I'm still torn on the ps3 and might just get a nds instead

Being locked to region 1 and region A is a bonus in my mind actually. Films come out much quicker in the US and in a lot of cases cheaper!

Plus you not be able to rent blu-ray movies from your local blockbuster other local movie rental place....

I myself rent out must the blu-ray movies i watch....(as i can't afford about £20 to buy every blu-ray movie i want to watch)

LOL, good luck sourcing a NDS over here, I cant find a single place that has them instock, newegg had a bundle thingy for $159 which comes with a crappy game, otherwise nobody has any.

Yeah NDS's appear to be like rocking horse excrement.
I've tried Gamestop, and Best Buy with no joy. Someone at work said walmart was probally my best bet to get one so I may have to go to and have look there.

Im also having trouble finding Wii controllers for a friend. He wants 2 controllers and nunchuks but they are also in short supply.

I have seen quite a few nunchuks at gamestop, haven't check walmart yet, though they are sold out online, so its doubtful their stores have any.

US PS3s will not play UK DVDs, Blu Ray DVDs, but will currently play all current games as PS3 games are not coded to any area and I doubt that Sony will introduce this. Any regular kettle lead will fit and PS3 is automatically adaptable to voltage change.

PS3 in UK are now well under £300. Bottom out at £269 for standard 40GB standalone.

How much after import would the yank one be for all the lost possible useability?

A

Based on $400 + 8% sales tax and a credit card type rate of 1.92. It works out at around £225

So is the saving worth the hassle? im beginning to think not.

Nuchucks are a plenty in Gamestop, Controllers on the other hand are AWOL.

I just hope I land at the same time as the Lagos flight again back in the UK. customs completly ignore you while that ones coming in

See if you can oder from outpost/frys online, assuming they are not from the state your currently in (they take uk CCs online), I bought a ps3 from them and since I am in Massachusetts I am not paying sales tax. As for customs, I was planning on bringing my xbox 360 over here when I came, but didn't because i couldn't be bothered, whats to say I didn't bring a PS3 with me I am here for 4 weeks after all, theres absolutely no way for them to know any different.

no sales tax in Massachusetts? I didnt know that I guess ill have to aim at a trip to out our staughton or cambridge offices next.

Im not sure i can order online for delivery to a hotel but ive talked to one of my work mates about it and hes not adverse to me ordering stuff to his adress.

There are sales taxes, however if the shop you order from is out of state you dont pay sales taxes (when ordering online.)

I believe Oregon is another state with 0% sales tax...
