Hi Chaps, I'm looking to make my first mATX (none overclock) build by downsizing from my current rig. I want to use the attached mobo as its cheap, and got usb 3 and sata 6/gps etc. Also I will use onboard graphics so already I can sell my noisey graphics card. I just need some pointers on the following...
1. Will the current memory & cpu work ok with it?
CPU is i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ)
MEMORY is Patriot PVT36G1600LLK DDR3 1600 Mhz
2. Can I have a "passive" cooler in a mATX case, no fans etc so totally totally silent? If so which ones?
3. What PSU should I get? Bear in mind there could be up to 4 hdd's etc &DVD DRIVE too
4. And finally I think I'd like a case a bit like an amplifier any ideas would be greatly appreciated, but I guess that might be dependant on cooling etc .....thanks!

The motherboard is 1156 socket and the 17 829 is 1366 so that won't work unfortunately;
DFI Lan Party JR X58-T3H6 Intel X58
Asus Rampage III Gene Intel X58
MSI X58M Intel X58
Should all work

As crisbduck said, it's not going to be compatible on that motherboard. If your after an efficient mATX based system and plan to run onboard graphics then you may be better of selling your i7 920 system completely. That RAM is triple channel where as the motherboard you have link to will take double channel memory. It will work but won't run in tripple channel mode I think.

As above all those boards are mATX X58 (socket 1366) so will accept your CPU & RAM, but they're not cheap at all. Also i7 (1366) processors run hot so you won't run a passive cooler.

You might struggle to get an amplifier like case which can take 4 HDDs and an optical drive that is to your taste.

Large cases like the SilverStone Lascala LC17S will be around £80-100 at minimum, smaller mATX cases won't hold that many drives.

What will the system be used for? Total budget?

You will probably be better of replacing the cpu/mobo/ram to be honest.

That board you linked to is socket 1155 so Sandy Bridge CPUs only (i3-2xxx, i5-2xxx, i7-2xxx). If you are going to use onboard graphics then definitely get a Sandy Bridge CPU to go with that board as the onboard graphics on the SB CPUs are great.

If you are having 4 HDDs surely you can have a fan on the cooler as one decent quiet fan will be quieter than your 4 HDDs and wont really add to the noise that they will make.

As for cases that look like an amp you will struggle to find ones that will take 4x 3.5" HDDs. Look at these two:
http://www.silverstonetek.com/products/p_contents.php?pno=GD06&area=usa
http://www.lian-li.com/v2/en/product/product06.php?pr_index=263&cl_index=1&sc_index=26&ss_index=68

In those cases you will most likely have to put a fan on a cooler, something like a Thermalright AXP-140 with a silent fan should be enough, as the cases aren't big enough to fit decent passive coolers in.

edit: oh and your current RAM will go on that board fine.

ok cool - is sandy bridge faster then than what I got already? I'll sell it all I think I think budget will be all I am selling - current PC should get near enough 400 then ps3 aswell - maybe some extra probably 600 quid

Ok I'm getting close to a set list :-)

CPU
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-358-IN
£249.98

MOBO

£90.00

RAM
KEEPING
Patriot PVT36G1600LLK DDR3 1600 Mhz (Will I get top performance still with that mobo?)

COOLING
NO OC - so stock fan should be good - or might it be noisey? how about this if needed
£50.00 (including).. CASE £100...ST NEED THE QUIETEST PSU NOW FOR THIS LOT...?

Can I ask what your uses are going to be for this system. As your getting rid of your graphics card, I'm guessing your not going to be gaming at all?

Also, best remove the link to competitor sites - you'll get a suspension if a mod sees!;)

Also what motherboard have you got right now?

Yes the CPU will depend on what you are using it for. Also you wont be able to OC on that board so you may as well get the 2600 (non K version) to save some money. But if you do not need hyper threading then an i5-2500 will be enough.

PSU wise shop around for a seasonic x series. The X-400 and X-460 are fanless PSUs and should be enough or the X-560 which has a fan. The fanless ones should be ok as the 3 Silverstone golf blade fans that come with the case are supposed to be pretty quiet.

As vinnie said, going Sandybrige whilst you've still got an i7 (1366) isn't worth it. Yes it's a bit quicker but not worth the outlay to be honest.

It all depends I guess on how desperate you are to get a smaller case.

Pesonally if you fancy just getting a HTPC style case, do that and get one that can house full ATX form factor boards.

How about the "Antec Fusion Remote Max" - £150, 444 x 190 x 452 (WxHxD mm) so it's not that much bigger than the case you linked earlier.

Will take full ATX boards, 4 3.5" drive bays and looks nice too.

Given that your not gaming, get rid of your graphics card, add in a passive Radeon HD5450.

Your doing pretty CPU & RAM intensive tasks so you'd be best sticking with your current setup, for the time being at least. Wait to see how AMD's Bulldozer performs (or even a bit longer for Intel's stuff) and then upgrade your system and downsize.

I wouldn't upgrade just because you want to downsize (if that makes sense).

Plenty of other "large" HTPC style cases around too.

How about the following if you still want to downsize and do an overhaul.

Use same RAM and optical drive. Depending on what PSU you have, and if its not too noisy, you can still with that too.

Intel Core i5-2400 3.10GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £154.99

Lian Li PC-V354B Aluminium Mini-Tower Case - Black £135.98

MSI H67MA-E45 Intel H67 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Micro-ATX Motherboard - (Sandybridge) **B3 REVISION** £82.99

Gelid Tranquillo CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940/AM2/AM2+/AM3/LGA775/LGA1155/LGA1156/LGA1366) £26.53

Total : £400.50

Loads of expansion in this case so can go upto 7x 3.5" drives. Very quiet CPU cooler too if the stock one is a bit loud.

Going from i7 920 to i5 2400 is a pointless tho in my opinion. Could go for the i7 2600 if you needed hyperthreading.

think this is what I want, although it's a got a bit over priced but still, it looks mint
if you can see any howlers let me know (thought about the i7 thing and opted to go i7-sandy plus I get the built in graphics then and keep performance???)

thanks for all your advice, I'd have rushed and made a balls up if I hadnt been patient and checked in with the OC guru's....

MB
MSI H67MA-E45 Intel H67 - £82.99 (that board looks tops!! when's it due in stock?)
Never had an MSI before.....

CASE
Lian Li PC-V354B Aluminium Mini-Tower Case - Black - £135.98 (not too bothered about HTPC style really just "a lot smaller" is all I'm after) Like the fact there is a bit of extra room in here I'm bit of a data hoarder. But now I'm looking to get into 6/gps SATA - I'm gonna have to capital on that now with some new disks???lol its getting out of control already..cant be trusted :-9

CPU
Intel Core i7-2600K 3.40GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 - £250

COOLER
Gelid Tranquillo CPU Cooler £26

RAM
Patriot PVT36G1600LLK DDR3 1600 Mhz (carry over)

PSU
[650W Seasonic X-650 Modular Ultimate Performance PSU £124.99]
Hey might just keep my be Quiet Dark power pro 1000w to save cash!??

TOTAL £468 (no pSu) £600 (psu)...........

wheelscene, since you are concerned with downsizing, you may want to take a closer look at the size of the cases mentioned in this thread:

Lian-Li PC-V354 (Micro-ATX) - 32.9 liters
SilverStone LC17 (Full ATX) - 30.7 liters
SilverStone GD06 (Micro-ATX) - 22.4 liters

I think my main gripe was with the graphics noise and the size of the HAF 932, I dont game anymore but do require some beef as I work from home using a virtual machine and lots of the other stuff. I think I can really quieten things down with a passive graphics card (ati 5450) which I have in a media PC under the tele!

So how about keeping I7, mobo & ram and PSU adding ati 5450 and just bunging them into the lian-li - would that give me better performance than all the new kit but still be pretty quiet?

When you say keeping i7 - which i7 are you referring to?

If your referring to you current i7 920 & Gigabyte UD5 - then NO - the Lian-Li PC-V354 case would be too small, as your motherboard is ATX and the case will take mATX/mini-ITX.

I would personally get a quiet case (see Fractal Design R3) and move all your current kit into there (including PSU). Buy a passive Radeon HD5450. If the stock cooler is too loud then get the Gelid Tranquillo cooler.

In a year or so, then upgrade to the latest kit and downsize at the same time. Remember all those mechanical hard drives aren't going to be quiet either.

As someone with a V354 as their main PC I would strongly recommend against it for what you are suggesting. As silverstone Rep commented on earlier it is incredibly big for a mATX case.

You'd be better either sticking with your existing components and getting a Lian Li A05N, or looking at something like the Antec Fusion Max or Silverstone LC16 or similar. Possibly even a PC-31/2/3

As many people have said switching from a i7 920 to an SB right now is just not worth it. And while everyone has said your old memory (tri channel) is compatible with your new board (dual channel) it does mean that you'll only have 4GB or it just won't run anywhere near as fast so you have a lose there as well.
