What exactly is your issue? He has a solid resume and can act. Why are you so butt hurt over it?

Do you ask these questions for all casting decisions?

How utterly bizarre.

I doubt he's anywhere near as mainstream as others that were also in the running.

u wot m8? A couple of minor roles in some straight to TV movies. A few episodes in very small-fry TV shows over the last decade with the exception of his part in Sex Education.

How's that solid?
Well that's about what Smith had..They are/were both young actors which tends to mean unless you were acting as a 6 year old your TV and film appearances will be limited.

And his part in Sex Education is as one of the three or four main characters with a lot of screen time and some fairly hefty acting to do in terms of the character he was playing and the situations, that tends to count for a lot.

He's also got a couple of awards for acting, including one of the higher UK TV acting awards which is pretty good going for something his age, especially as it seems he was in full time education until leaving university with a degree, and that IMDB listing as always doesn't mention any non screen roles he's done (one of the big issues/annoyances I have with IMDB is that it can miss out huge swathes of someone's work if for example they've concentrated on theatre for while).

Smith had a lot of stage experience before he took over the role. He did a quite a bit of the West End circuit.

Ah yes because every actor who is going to appear in a big show should already be "mainstream" and known to everyone.

There can be huge advantages to using someone who isn't "mainstream", not least that you don't necessarily immediately look at them and say "isn't that X from Eastenders" or "didn't he play the same basic role in X, Y and Z".

They tried several "mainstream" actors for the doctor, it didn't always work out, they've also tried relative unknowns in the past that have worked out, it's not about how "mainstream" someone is, it's about how the director and showrunners think they'll do and if they're going to be available to do it.

Rather than merge this, I'll just point out that there's a huge Doctor Who thread over in the Music, Box Office, TV & Books forum here where this is being discussed.
