Draytek routers, how good are they?

I've not used a USB Printer with a Draytek before but I expect (waits to be proven wrong :p) that the router should give the printer its own IP address (this is what happens with normal network printers that have their own ethernet cable anyway) so that when you install the printer on a PC, you say during install that its a network printer and it should either find it automatically or manually give its address or network name.

You may need to go into the router settings to set the printer up in there first. Should all be in the manual?

:)

I work for an isp and see constant issues with them, 21cn, LLU - in fact anything other than BT IPStream and possibly datastream and they seem to have issues. Full of features but not worth the money, if your heading towards the 150-200 quid mark go and get a cisco imo.

Like I said, I'm most likely doing it wrong :p So let me get this straight, you install the printer on each computer in the normal way (in this case just plug it into a usb port and let windows do the work), plug the printer back into the USB port on the router and then what? Sorry for being such a noob but my networking skills extend as far as getting a PC to access the internet via wireless.

You don't attach the printer to your PC at all. you configure the printer with an IP on the router or possibly it'll share the router LAN IP you need to consult the manual.

you add a local printer in windows. Under port type select standard TCP/IP port then follow the wizard. At some point you'll need to install the driver for it which means downloading it or using the printer CD. Then it's done.

Most of this should be covered in the router manual if printer sharing is supported on the router.

Bit of geek info here but apparently some of the major ISP's i work with have warned against using Drayteks, especially older ones such as 2600 series as they use an ADSL chip known as the "AR7" Chipset which has problems with keeping the line in sync etc.

We used a lot of Drayteks here and quite a few of our clients still have 2600s dotted around where theyre just using them as modems. Dont really get problems with regular ADSL Max ( up to 8mb ) but as has been said already, Drayteks have issues with ADSL2 like BE.

I got my 2800 working when I had a BE connection but it synced at about 1mbps slower than the BE box. I later tried with a 2820 and there was a similar lack in speed.

That being said, they have a lot of features on there and they are generally reliable :)

Does the 2710n have the ADSL2+ issue as mentioned above?

Also someone with this router may you please confirm if this router has the ability to Wake-on-LAN computers once connected to the remote management interface?

according to this article it does but I need verification please

Unfortunately it seems only Draytek offer an all in one solution that also supports WOL (just need confirmation on WOL please)
