Anyone ever used a DC VGA cable? I read before that the quality wasn't much better than S-VIDEO etc, can anyone confirm how good they are or any certain brands to avoid?

I don't know who told you that but it's frankly nonsense. The VGA cable looks fantastic on a CRT and still pretty decent on an LCD.

Generic chinese cables might use crappy cabling and be subject to smearing or interference so I'd avoid those. Other than that you should be fine with any cable, you could even make your own ( http://www.instructables.com/id/Sega-Dreamcast-VGA-Mod/ )

I had a VGA cable for my Dreamcast and got amazing picture quality.

I still use my vga cable for my DC whenever I get that urge to play Zero Gunner 2. Looks great.
