dremel style tools?

I know a while back me dad bought a Homebase own brand in their sales - appeared to have a good range of attachments etc.

Might be worth heading that way (and probably B&Q who will probably have their own brand) to see if they still have them and then see if the Dremel kit fits it.

How much is a router these days?

Apparently they're expensive.

Pop into a B&Q type place, they have their own dremel things for about £25. You might be able to open boxes and see if things fit together (dremel accessories + cheapy dremel-esque drills).

NVM just found Dremel Rotary Tool 300 Series + 25 Accessories for £29.99, seems perfect. Just have to double check the router bits take any dremel.

A decent Bosch/Dewalt/Makita 1/4" one is £150 and up and about £220 for a 1/2" one. None of the cheapo ones can take regular duty and are usually a total pain to use, with the controls in a funny place and no fine control.

Having said that, I've got a B&Q own brand 1/2" jobbie here on loan and it's ok. Not as good as a Dewalt but it's ok, and it's saved me £230 just to find out if a router is going to do the job I want to do or not.

It will probably work. Won't be great though & have a tendency to steer away from your cutting line. Also its going to melt the acrylic as it cuts due to the speed of the router & dremel. Will lead to a sticky blade on the dremel.

What thickness of acrylic are you cutting anyway? If 5mm or less and the lines you need to cut are straight ones, then it'll be better to score & snap the acrylic.

To polish and I guess so its clear/transparent, then you'll need to get it uniformly smooth at upto say 1200grit. then 1500, 2500, 4000. Then onto cutting compounds in various grades. If you are on about polishing up the cut edges only then get it to 1200grit and flame the edge with a small blowtorch, lowest heat, fairly fast passes with the flame (1ft in 5sec or so). just keep doing that and you'll see it gradually melt and turn perfectly clear!

You will find it difficult to keep the dremel tool perfectly square and it will jump and kick. Give it a go by all means. You will need polishing mops and polishing compounds to get a shiny finish.
