This is a genuine question, I'm working today and I have been asked to wear "smart blacks". A google surprisingly showed nothing of help.

I'm guessing it's a black suit, smart shoes, but what shirt and tie combination? White shirt black tie? White shirt any tie? Black shirt dark tie? Black shirt black tie?

It simply means business dress and not Smart Casual as some might misinterpret smart dress. So Black shoes and Suit, White shirt and a conservative tie.

This is important. Though if it is an evening doo, i would probebly go with a black tie as it is a safe option but maybe just take a couple of ties and keep them in your car and decide when you pull up.

Plus make sure your tie is done up properly and not level with your third button.

If it is a black tie affair, then a bow tie is normally a prerequisite.

Well that's gone and thrown a curved ball into the situation! Haha! I think I'll just take a selection of ties (including a bow tie) and a spare black shirt. That way I'm covered!

Can't you just ask whoever told you to save all this hassle?

"Black trousers (not jeans) and a black shirt or a smart, black polo shirt with no logos. No need to wear a suit and tie"

It would have been funny to picture you walking up in full evening dress regalia, James Bond style when everyone else is wearing nike polo shirts...:)

They probably should have explained that to begin with, as last time I checked 'smart blacks' wasn't a known dresscode. You could have easily turned up in a suit with a white shirt.
