Went to the pub last night with some mates, we got there about 9.30PM and throughout most of the night noticed this guy that looked pretty sozzled, who kept going from table to table trying to talk to people. He could hardly talk and was slurring his words badly. At the end of the night about 12.20AM, we all left and got into my car at the same time this guy left the pub as well. Noticed he got in a car and started the engine, i turned round and said no way he can drive that. But he did and went on his way.

My mate rang the police and i set off to see where he went, i was no more than 30secs behind but he'd gone. Couldn't see him down any other streets as we drove past and there were no other cars about. I dropped a couple of mates off round the corner and carried on, as we carried on down this road one of my other mates pointed out to this car and sure enough it was him, slumped forward in the drivers seat. Luck would have it a police car was driving past a junction further on so we stopped them and told them what happened. They were with him for about 10mins and took him away.

I've found out today off one of the guys i was with, he had to give a statement to say what happened and turns out the guy was 3 times over the limit. But this guy is denying he was driving, just he went to sleep in his car as he was locked out. So i've got to give a statement to say i saw him drive off, now the thing is i hate drink driving theres no excuse for it, but just about everyone else has said i shouldn't have got involved and left him to it. And that this guy could come after us, as nothing will happen to him.

So is doing the right thing worth it or is it just too much hassle now days and we should all just stand by and let things take their course?

He doesn't have to be driving, he could still be charged with over the limit in charge of a motor vehicle.

I would've done the same, better him losing his licence than someone else walking by being killed.

Why shouldn't you get involved? He was lucky he didn't kill somebody.

You should make a statement and watch with delight when he gets banned :)

you should've stopped it from progressing to him leaving the carpark, calling the police wouldn't have been neccessary.

how would you feel if someone gave a statement against you??

Does every1 deserve another chance, or will it teach him a lesson.

From experience though, iv been done for drink driving and it taught me a big lesson, i will never do it again

I doubt he'd of simply said "oh ok mate, I'll walk home tonight instead".

By getting him shopped it gets him off the roads for at least a year, stopping him driving for that one evening just lets him keep doing it...

If he was that drunk I doubt he'd have just got said "You know what? Your right..."

He'd have probably tried to start something, and thought would have been a whole different kettle of fish.

OP has done the right thing, and should give a statement (etc)... better him be banned than someone losing their life.

True, but by the time i knew what was happening he'd gone. That and he was a pretty big guy and with alcohol inside him, i wasn't sure that was the best solution and thought the police would be better to handle it.

I'm going to the station on thursday to give a statement. Like i said i hate drink driving and stopping someone doing it is a plus, but other people i've spoken to didn't seem bothered by him doing it and would have just minded their own business.

Until he ran over their mother. Then they'd be moaning about how stupid and dangerous drink driving is ;)

I shopped someone for drink driving years back. Rang crimestoppers and gave them all his details. Did it anonymously because he lived downstairs from my boyfriend at the time and didnt want him getting any hassle.
I told them the pub he drank at and what time he usually left. They pulled him over and he got done.
Dont regret it for a minute.

Fully agree with all above, give the statement, how would you feel if you picked up the paper one day and discovered someone had been killed by a drunk driver which turned out to be him, you would be thinking you could have prevented that. :)
