Drink Driving

My friend has just started dating a bloke (very early days) he has been done for drunk driving, however he has to sign on at a police station - does anyone know why? as i dont think this is typical.

He has to go into the police station and sign to prove hes still in the country - i think.

Oo-er sounds likely hes on probation for something then - maybe the drink driving offence.

I'm not sure though because thats what probation officers do. I'm curious too now.
