lo guys,

I was wondering, what is the legal drinking age in somebody elses house?

The reason I ask is because im going to have a garden party at my place on saturday (BBQ etc) and one of my mates that is coming over is 17. Im 19, obviously I wont be buying alchol for him, but im unsure of what the law is on the subject of if he was drinking on my property.

Cheers, slightly odd question but hey!

Afaik about UK law, people are legal to drink any time provided they're with an adult.

Here (in the NL) it's simpler:
Drinking age : None
Buying age = 16

LOL are you seriously going to sit there drinking and not offer him a can, even though he will be 18 in under a year. Glad I aint your buddy.

It is 18 for buying alcohol, you can however give it to younger people, unsure how old you have to be though, might be 21.

Chill out dude.

afaik its only illegal to buy alcohol for underage people you don't know and have no knowledge of how or where they are to drink. Buying booze, taking it to your house and letting whoever you want drink it is fine. Frankly if you think the police will come to your house and arrest anyone for drinking on private property you're being paranoid. If you think a 17yr old can't get his own booze, you're leading a sheltered life also.

Exactly what I was thinking! Next you'll be asking the decibel limit for 7pm because you're worried your guests are illegally loud.

lol cheers for all the responses, few things to point out.

1) Last time we had a garden party some lads got "rowdy" so the neighbours called the police (Not ideal)

2) Its not like im not going to "OFFER" him a can but if he "ACCIDENTLY" gets his hands on it, nothing I can do is their ;)

3) Im not paranoid about police coming round or anything, im sure they have plenty of better things to do in my area (Birmingham - Nice place :/)

I was just generally intrested as people were telling me all sorts.

I'd check for yourself, because UK law is often a patchwork affair and needlessly complicated, but I am almost certain that it's legal for you to give him beer on your property. Not just turn a blind eye to it (which would just be you claiming ignorance as a defence), but hand it to him.

There's something about food in the law, too, and an age limit of 16 when accompanied by an adult, but that's for licensed premises (e.g. a restaurant with an on license).

Hmm...a quick look indicates that the age limit on private property is 5 years old with the consent of parents or legal guardians. So it appears you're fine if his parents or legal guardians say it's OK.

5 but it's not like pc plod is going to find out at any age.
Anyway, don't worry if the police come, EVERYONE has house partys, and from time to time, the police may come and tell you to turn it down (because your nieghbours are oo lazy to ask you themselves. But thats just part of it, not gonna arest you or fine you, because its such a common occurence and the only people that don't party when they're around that age are probably complete social rejects. (And police officers have to be able to work with the public, so you won't get many tards, therefore policmen party)

^^ What this guy said.

I've never been to a party where the person holding it was so concerned in the drinking age and wanted to 'check' it was ok for his 17 year old mate to drink.

Sounds like you're going to have a whale of a time....

I think you'll be fine with simply getting him some beers - as others have said - I don't believe there is a law stopping people from consuming it at 17 at home - just purchasing it.

If you're really paranoid then get him some food - tis legal for a 16 year old to have alcohol with a meal in a pub/restaurant in the UK.

UK.

18+ to buy alcohol.

No restricted age to consume it AFAIK.

Hence why if I go to parties, even hotel parties, I can have as much drink as a like, despite being 16.

In other people's houses, I assume its the same. If you didn't buy it, you are welcome to drink it.

lol at some of the replies :D

Dont worry we will have a "Whale of a time". I was more intreeged than concerned about this issue ;)
