depends on your situation

some people do this, for tempory relief just to get away from their horrendous life (i am speaking from experience)

which proves the point?

I drink on my own a lot.

I like my own company
I like beer

I never drink anything stronger than beer. I see no problem :).

My father was an alcoholic and it killed him eventually so I think I could spot alcoholism a mile off.

unfortunately, we view ourselves differently to others, even when in the same situation.
a friend of my wife lost her mum at a young age to alcohol, she says the same 'i could spot an alcoholic miles off', yet she is fast becoming an alcoholic. she is 22.

mate, im not proving a point i have a good life now and drink only on w/e for recreation

i never said you are proving a point, i said you are proving the point that is being made about drinking alone is sad. getting drunk alone is sad.

I've been out a countless number of times with "mates" to drink "socially", but i've always found it more relaxing, feeling the effects of alcohol when i'm alone. I have control over my environment, what music i listen to, and who i talk to, even if it IS just on msn. Perhaps not as cool as the hip, young university children of today, who enjoy making a mockery of themselves, ******* some unknown, undignified tramp in the toilets, messing yourself and shouting at the floor. So, the people branding lone drinkers "sad", can continue doing what they do, whilst i restore the balance of dignity.

Take into account what being "drunk" actually means, then question how environment has any bearing on drinking. Why is drinking more acceptable from one situation to another?

Belive me, you are not proving any point either Morba.

On the whole, I'd rather get drunk than listen to your point of view. Even if that means getting drunk on my own. Cheers.

i didnt need to prove a point, i gave my opinion. learn to accept that people have opinions and they differ from others.

if someone needs to be alone and to drink to get away from the world, then that is a sad place to be. drinking in that situation is sad. do you see that as anything else?

I never said its acceptable or not acceptable in any situation. I said that in this situation i think it is sad. i never said that it is not acceptable.

Just chilling browsing the web and watching voyager re-runs with an ice cold bottle of Cobra, I've had my share of going out and getting lashed when I was younger, now I just look foward to a couple of cold ones from the fridge after a hard day at work and of course sinking into the sofa :D .

Fresh 'out of the fridge' can of Stella for me. a few smokes and a lot of loud music (through my headphones of course, wouldn't want to upset the neighbours)... i don't care if I'm sad I'm enjoying myself and I'm never more than a couple of meters from my bed :p

You believe all lone drinkers, drink alone, to "get away from the world" ? The biggest sweeping generalisation i've witnessed on these boards, for a looong time. Sure, people drink themselves stupid for escapism, but social drinkers are just as prone to this method of escapism as a lone drinker.

Nothing wrong with drinking yourself.....i've been sitting here working my way through some strongbow. Im alone but talking to 5 mates via teamspeak. Drink is lovely, banter is flowing....its all good.

are you unable to comprehend what people are typing?

i have pinpointed one persons example and said that drinking in that way is proving a point.
i have not once said that all lone drinkers do it to get away from the world.
