My mum is looking for a water softner for her house abroad and it got me thinking about tap water. Why is it in some countrys we are warned not to drink from the tap, like spain? Surely they could have updated their water purifying plants or whatever by now?

Another thing i was wondering, is tap water safe to drink everywhere in the UK?

Well, a lot of countries have non-potable water... so I wouldn't drink that. The locals may have - over time - become tolerant of the sewage/waterborne stuff. It's mainly due to water treatment.

However, I've drank water all around the world (developed nations) and not been ill from it.

I don't know why they mention Spain when you can go to a water fountain in a town/city which will often have the sign "agua potable". It will be unvandalised and clean and free.

I remember looking for a shop during siesta time in Granada and stumbled across a drinking fountain. I am alive and healthy.

I have no problems drinking my tap water, it tastes absolutely fine and only *insert dirt cheap price from water company here*

Does drinking 'hard' water become bad for you? Looking at a kettle thats been boiling hardwater, and the limescale it collects it certainly doesn't look like it!

"hard" water is good for you (lots of minerals etc)

"soft" water is bad for you (no minerals etc, the stuff the use for science experiments)

boiling water to clean it has nothing to do with "hard" or "soft" water, its just to kill bacteria

Should I avoid tapwater in thailand/japan?
Everyone told me not to drink tap water in Korea or Japan. Even the locals drink mainly filtered etc.

However, when in Japan I drank about 5 litres of water (was hot and doing Aikido) daily. Right from the tap/shower. I didn't die.

I'm yet to find a brand of bottled water that doesn't taste nasty compared to tap water.
The water in my flat is undrinkable unless it has been through the most expensive Brita filter. Literally leave a glass of water on the side and by the morning it'd stink of ****. A lot of bottled water tastes better than that! However, I'm mildly concerned about the chemicals in the bottle plastic.

I thought that it was just because our water has extra flouride or something that kills more bacteria and stuff. Other countries can drink their water because they are used to what's in it, but as brits, we aren't?
Or is that a load of FUD?

The tab water from my house (Herefordshire) is so "pure", i have put it in my espresso machine for the past 10 months and it has zero lime scale.

When i was in Brighton, i could see white bits when i get a glass from the tab.
