A mate has an old PC that he is having trouble with. I had a look at it and after putting in one of my old drives and installing windows it was fine but im confused because I can hook his old one up to my comp as an external one and it works fine but wen i tried to put it back in it says there is a primary hard disk error.

Can disks still work in windows but not allow booting if they are near the end of their days or is it another issue?

My Dad had a drive that failed on him ages ago, he stuck it in another PC and was able to get the data off it before it failed. The drive didn't boot at all.

Or... you might have the jumper settings wrong?
