Hi, sorry if this is already answered, I did a search and couldn't find a solution.
I just got a new WD My Book Essential HDD, and wondered if I could swap some drive letters around. Currently I have:

A: Floppy
C: SYSTEM (WinXP installed here)(SATA)
D: DATA (SATA)
E: DVD-RW Drive
F: DATA 2 (SATA)
G: My Book (USB)

Plus other removable things like my printer, scanner, iPod, phone, USB stick.

- I know I can't use B: or change the System drive, but can I for example make the DVD-RW as D: and "DATA" as E:?
- If I can make the DVD-RW D:, will my current D: "DATA" drive get wiped?
- And finally, will my removable things just take the letters H: onwards if I just plug them in? Will they remember what letter they are or will they just take the next free one?

I know about how to change the drives in disk management but that's about it. Thanks for any help!

You can change driver letters of any drive napart from your Windows drive, if is C its C for keeps, you could ruin everythig if you tried to change with use of a APP.

You can in Explorer rename any HDD inc removable drives like USB thumb drive or Card Readers, I have my USB Thumb drive as Corsair, and Cards Readers are like Top slot, Bottom Slot etc. (easier when you right click a file and send to and know what position cards in drive)

You can use the Registry to give all optical drives names like Pioneer 112D and NEC etc.

Ok thanks, renaming the removables sounds easy. I'm definitely not going to change the Windows C drive, I want to keep everything as safe as possible.

But what about renaming my DVD-RW drive to a letter already taken by my 2nd HDD (D)? Will it wipe it and do I need to change the HDD to an unused letter first to make room, then switch it back to the now empty one?
Basically swap DVD-RW to D, "DATA" to E.

right click on whichever drive you want to change the letter of and bingo :D
tip:change the letters to something like x,y,z then you can rename using,g,h,i,etc
