i have a laptop drive plugged into a usb adaptor. the drive is detected in windows, and shows in my computer, but there are no values. ie drive size. If i double click on it it just comes up as empty. this drive was removed from a laptop with plenty of files, so should be something there!

anyone able to help?

After first reading your post I instantly thought NTFS drive (fat32 OS), but I guess thats probably not this issue.

Could be a USB issue.

If I plug a USB Pen into the front of my PC I get 'installing device' followed by the usual system tray messages, but the drive fails to show in Explorer. If I connect it to a USB port at the back of the PC it works perfectly. I've never understood why and now have an extension to save me bending down and messing about around the back.

If it has external power plug it in and power it up forst for about 5-10 secs before you connect it to the pc. Ive seen it severa times before where you plug it in then power it up and it shows in disk management as unknown.
