I have been given an old broken tower and been asked to take the files from the hard disc and put them on the laptop which was bought to replace it.

The tower doesn't boot up at all so I've taken the sata drive out and put it in a caddy and plugged it straight into the laptop. Windows 7 finds the device but cannot access it as it needs installation which involves formatting.

I could format the drive and run some data recovery software but is there any way to access the data without formatting the drive?

Thanks for any help

Whilst it's in the caddy

Try running testdisk on it to recover the partition(s)

If you're not comfortable with that, download the trial for 'getdatabackforntfs' and run that on the drive. This has worked for me on someone else's drive in the past when all the free tools failed to work. The trial will tell you what it can find, then make the client buy the software for you ;)
