Wierd question but,Can a 2.5 drive in a USB 2.0 caddie be made to run at USB 1.0 speeds or can this only be done by the machine itself?

I have this hdd setup connected to my dvd recrder through it's usb 1 port and when playing 5.1 sound movies it can't keep up with the sound. When playing stereo movie clips it works just fine.

Just to check I'm following here - you want to limit your USB caddy so that it stays in sync? If your DVD recorder is USB 1 only then the USB caddy will autosense and limit itself to that anyway, I suspect that it (USB 1 e.g. max of about 12mbps) is simply too slow a transfer rate to deal with the data stream needed when working with 5.1 or maybe it is just that the encoding is worse on 5.1 films.

Yes that is what i am wanting to do.My DVD recorder is USB 1.When i use 5.1 movies the sound breaks now and again but picture is still good (when using USB hdd). When i do the same thing using a usb pen it works perfectly with no loss of sound but i am limited with 2gb and one movie.

Ok I think I follow now but as I said whatever is plugged into the USB port will autosense and use the highest available transfer rate so it rather sounds as if your USB hard drive can't cope with the transfer rate required which is odd as even old hard drives should easily be able to cope with the 12mbps (or thereabouts) that USB 1 can provide.

Last possible question though before I think I have to admit defeat, are you using the same film for testing on the USB pen drive and the USB hard drive? Just in case it is an isolated problem with one film.

Yes i am using the same film for both. The usb hdd can send and will run @ usb 2.0 speeds on my pc but doesn't seem to slow down enough (I think) to run smothly on the drvd recorder.

Sorry for not replying sooner been very busy.

Could you please rephrase your post David i am confused?

Oh well i will just have to put up with this problem until i can find a way around it ( or someone else does). :D
