¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Has anyone else had this? I'm experimenting now with no compression and it appears to have got further than before, but I've tried it 4 or 5 times now and it crashes after a few mins...

What could be causing this?

I've tried Prime95 on blend and small ftt so I think the system is stable. It's not overclocked at all!

I've used DriveimageXML a couple of dozen times on various pc's and never had it crash. iirc I've only ever used it on the boot partition and my boot partitions are almost always less than 32GB.

In what way is it crashing: closing down unexpectedly, re-boot, blue screen or just sitting there not responding ? Is the system still usable?

Well it will be streaming data at max speed on this job, might be the writeback cache, it will slow it down but you could try disabling writeback on the target drive just to test.

Total lockup, nothing responds.

I think it's a hardware fault, as it only does it when backing up over a network, when it backs up to a local drive it's fine.

I'm trying another backup now, after a few tweaks, hopefully it will work this time.

I've not had a problem backing up over a network either.

If you start a constant ping can you see the network connection fail a short while before the pc locks up?

If after the lock up you leave everything for 20 to 30 minutes do things recover? This should cover hd problems, dcom problems and some nw issues.

I assume this is a Windows network ? There is a nasty in Windows networking to do with persistent network connections which can cause long delays during NW access, lookup 'NET USE /Persistent:No'.
