Driver caught doing 154mph and only gets 56 day ban!

I've never driven the autobahn, but I'd heard the standard of driving was much higher? ie lane discipline.

I've done stupid speeds in the past on our roads as an invincible lad, it really isn't worth the risk.

This is true.

Generally the standard of driving on an Autobahn is higher but the quality of the road is lower. We love to knock our roads but honestly in the UK we have some absolutely excellently designed road networks.

The worst bit on the Autobahn is some of the backwards junctions where the entry slip road is BEFORE the exit slip road - so traffic entering the Autobahn is conflicting with traffic leaving it. Bonkers.

I think this says it all:

Yeah, I can't compare but I've never had an issue with our motorway network other than road works.

Miles and miles of it where a high speed is simple to achieve.

Most i ever did on the motorway was 122mph in bmw 316. This was 16 years ago and lashing down with rain, i did it because i had a girl with me at the time that i couldnt stand (yes we were arguing) and wanted to get her back home asap and away from me. Was stupid at the time. In the m3 that i have now most of done is 100mph, im more cautious this time around.

Same in the Netherlands, a bit mad but I never really came across much traffic so was never an issue.

I received a 56 day ban once upon a time for 102 in a 50. I've heard of people getting done for dangerous driving and stuff for these 150mph speeds before. Just shows how inconsistent the judges/courts are in this country.

It's almost as if they're human beings specifically employed to weigh up the particular circumstances of each case and use their judgement to issue an appropriate punishment rather than just looking it up from a table.

I have been at some pretty quick speeds, but the guy who bought my old S4 called me a week after buying it to see if I had it de-limited. Turns out he had it off the clock (~165 mph) on this small section of road : https://www.google.co.uk/maps/dir/5...-3.4943127,14z/am=t/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!4m1!3e0

Which is basically a big corner.

I never had that car near that speed (~135 max), and that was on the M6 Toll when I first bought the car. After that, it never broke 3 figures again in my ownership. (In fact, I don't think I've ever broken 3 figures since then).

I have been in one of my mates motors breaking 160 though. That felt pretty quick for a wee while. On a dual carriageway, so not exactly a huge road.

Well that's the issue isn't it, and hence my point about inconsistency. A 21yr old flat out in his Seat (which meant he'd be flat out for quite some time at that speed, increasing the risk of accident) getting a very lenient result compared to an experience driver doing a quick 15 second blat and back down getting the same, but a higher fine! It's quite a deviation so perhaps they should properly risk assess these things.

What?

Do you understand that a 56 day ban and a medium sized fine might be just as much punishment to someone as a 2 year ban and no fine, or no ban and a huge fine?

Judges are there specifically to decide what is an appropriate punishment given all the circumstances - circumstances which you are almost certainly not privy to the full details of. Are you more qualified than the judge in this case to decide on what is or is not a suitable punishment?

Don't ask stupid questions. The perception is that the penalty was light. Very light.

The Police and CPS decided to pursue a prosecution for speeding rather than one of dangerous driving. This always meant that the tariff was going to be light, especially in the implied circumstances of his speeding to get back to his disabled mother.

Had they secured a successful conviction of dangerous driving, he would have received a much greater penalty as the guidelines for both sentencing and mitigation are of a different scale.

As opposed to the tragically overstated 'styling' of the RS and Type-R?

the only one i wouldn't buy is the RS, i hate the Focus.

my shortlist is the R-Type and the Subaru wrx sti.......i wont know until i've test driven both
