Hello yet again!

I have been slowly downloading the drivers I need for my first build. Thanks to members of the forum particularly teppic I have been making some progress. Unsurprisingly however I have a bunch of new questions.

For the Gigabyte Z87X OC motherboard I have downloaded all the drivers except for the USB 3.0. The website has the download but also says a hotfix must be downloaded as well. Unfortunately there are three possible hotfix downloads to choose from and I am not sure if all three must be used or one specific driver from the three. These are shown as follows.....

Hot fix
KB2822241 KB2811660 KB2779768
(Improve USB3.0 Device compatibility)
(Note) After installed USB 3.0 driver, please install Hot fix.

Any help as to which of the downloads beginning with KB I should use would be appreciated.

As for the HD7970 cards I am using, there are a few downloads available. Theses are as follows.....

Catalyst software suite
Latest Beta driver
AMD Catalyst application profiles

And one optional download - Hydravision package

I know thanks to teppic that the latest Beta driver is needed but I am not sure about the others.

And finally, all the drivers I have downloaded so far have been saved to the downloads folder in windows. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to install them? The Motherboard drivers have all been binary files. I am not sure that once downloaded that they just look after themselves on a reboot or if they need to be opened/run or saved to a specific location.

Once again many thanks to anyone who takes the time to read through all this and has the patience to reply.

Motherboard drivers should normally have an .exe file to auto install. The only time there should be different files is when you download is when you flash your bios. With gigabyte they have there own software to flash the bios but the name of the program eludes me.

As for the drivers for the gpu you can download the latest beta drivers which is 13.10. As for the hydra vision pack it is optional and does not need to be installed all it does is to add an in invisible grid to your desktop so you can organsie program windows better.

I would probably run this one KB2779768 , but you could just run windows update after installing all your drivers. The KB hot fixes are because there are problems with USB 3 and Win 8 on Z87 boards. They are just window updates for your OS, to give better compatibility and stability with USB devices using USB 3.
In regards to your Gpu, download the catalyst suite and if it`s anything like the Nvidia equivalent, you can update your driver via that.

Hi, thanks for the replies. All drivers are now installed and everything appears to be ok. However, there just had to be one! The SSD which the operating system is running from is fine, but the 2TB Seagate HDD is not appearing anywhere. I have gone into the BIOS and that is not showing anything connected. The SSD and DVD are there however.

Any suggestions on troubleshooting this would be welcome.

Thanks again.

Does it appear under disk management? With all new drives they are in a blank state, and need to be formatted under disk management before they appear under computer.

Hello again,

Thanks for all the help, the 2TB drive is now appearing in the Device manager list, probably me being a little thick to be honest! Still can't seem to see it in the BIOS though, but once again probably me not fully understanding everything.

The device manager screen states that the device is working properly. However under the Volumes tab it states the drive is not initialised. Do I need to format/partition this drive? And if so how do I go about it? Finally, assuming I actually manage to get the drive working, how do I go about ensuring that anything I need to store from now on is directed to the HDD and not the SSD? Not sure if to expect different drive letters etc.

Thanks again everyone, this would not have been possible without your very kind help.

You've probably connected the drive to a 3rd party SATA controller instead of the Intel one if you don't see it listed in the BIOS. I think the Intel SATA ports are all the same colour. You want to use those as performance is better.

If you format the drive it'll just be given a new letter (the next available) and will be ready to use.

Hello again teppic,

Not 100% sure about the SATA controller. There are six ports on the motherboard but did not notice any difference. Not sure about the cables used for the power and data either. If I am missing something just let me know and will pop open the case and change things about if needed.

I'm just about to initialise the drive and I have two options so far.... MBR and GPT. MBT is selected as default so I am guessing this is the correct choice. Not sure how to thank you properly for your time teppic, you have been a tremendous help at every stage of the process. No doubt there will be more questions in the future but for now I will consider the build complete once the step of formatting this drive is complete :)

When you initialised the drive, you create an empty partition table (DOS/MBR or GPT). You then have to make a partition before you can format it and use it. It's up to you whether you create one huge partition, or several ones each with its own drive letter (the letter is assigned automatically).
