Ok I've got two computers. An i7920 (from OCUK) and a i7 930 (my first build). I've been toying with World Of Tanks and my frame rates have been around 30to 60 fps. I thought I would check drivers etc and found that on both systems I have an old 2009 driver ..wtf i asked myself. I tried to open catalyst and it was a no go. I then decided to delete all drivers and catalyst (scrubbed the system with driver sweeper and CCCleaner in safe mode) and removed all traces from registry. I downloaded the new install from amd and have tried to install a dozen times now but keep coming up with various fails .. I get a inf file missing and then just "unable to install" or just driver fail ?? I've trolled the internet for a solution and followed all the obvious steps .. what the heck am I missing here ..

Try system restore point.. You could damage your windows..

You never need to use these driver uninstaller programs till you have an issue..

A control panel, uninstall would been enough.

tried all that ... have systematically going through every step I can find on the net ... nothing has worked to date .. going through manually and deleting every bit of ati or amd that I can find and trying again .. don't really know what else to do.

got an XFX HD5850. I've just tried installing drivers while in safe mode. Best luck I have had yet. It's showing the card as a HD5850 and is now using a driver from 2011. Catalyst will not install at all even though I have gone through a thorough cleansing .. I've tried using a driver from 2013 but it just refuses to install and reverts back to a 2009 driver ..

No its means you shouldn't be messing inside of the Registry.. :p

You have broken your Windows system! You best bet is a clean install..

Less learned don't touch driver removal software unless you have an issue to begin with.. Don't go deleting random files from within the Registry.

All you had to do was Windows Control Panel, Add and Remove programs, restart and install latest driver.

I had used the uninstall software in windows to remove first of all. It progressed from there. On advice from other people with issues I then took further action. Only deleting the amd and ati folders in registry when doing a clean install. I even read it on a ati forum ...

Thats your problem you deleted everything. There was an issue with ATI/AMD drivers way back (possible 2009 ish) in that the inf file windows uses to identify AMD cards got deleted when either uninstalling the driver or using something like driver sweeper I remember because it happened to me.

I vaguely remember the fixes were either use system restore to go back to before you messed up the system and then install latest drivers over the top, dont uninstall or you had to go back to a certain driver version install that, then it would restore the missing inf file and then install latest drivers or get a copy of the missing inf file. It was a right royal pain.

hmmm on the i7 930 machine in device manager it is now recognizing it as a HD5800 series instead of the generic VGA adapter. The driver is still late 2011 though ... is there a way of copying the AMD inf file from the i7 920 machine as I have catalyst and drivers now working ..

Ok I contacted Microsoft and they say that the AMD inf file ships with Win7 x64. Apparently it is easily replaced .. unfortunately they want $147US to do it !!! Does anybody know what exact file it is, where it is located and how do I get it from one computer to the next

Why are you so against a fresh install? It takes half a day maximum even if you have loads of stuff to re-install. Less if you just install what you immediately require and everything else as and when you want to use it.
